Instagram Couples are Starting a Deadly Trend of Extreme Selfies

Just take a selfie in front of the Eiffel Tower like normal Instagram couples FFS.

Just when you thought you couldn’t hate those Instagram couples who seem to do nothing but travel, drink out of coconuts and take beautiful ‘plandid’ photos of each other anymore, they’ve now started a dangerous new trend. Extreme selfies have been in the news for all the wrong reasons for a while now, with people falling to their deaths in the name of a cool photo. More recently Insta-couples have been making headlines for posting photos of them kissing in super unsafe scenarios, potentially inspiring others to do the same.

Raquel and Miguel, a self-professed #travelcouple with 344k followers, posted a photo earlier this year of them kissing while hanging out of a moving train. Although the post got nearly 50 000 likes it’s also received a lot of backlash, with other Instagram users calling them out for encouraging this kind of unsafe behaviour.

Comments included ‘Idiots setting a trend where someone is going to get hurt. We are NOT impressed. You are a bad example for the world.’, ‘Idiots, ruining it for everyone,’ and simply, ‘You guys are the worst’. But more worrying are the people commenting ‘goals!’, ‘bucket list 😍’ and, in response to the negative comments, ‘real art divides people’ (‘cos LOL, I think that phrase refers more to, like, Jackson Pollock).

Cue the copy-cat posts. Camille and Jean, another couple who make a living being loved-up backpacking influencers, recreated the kiss with the caption ‘Our wildest kiss ever’:

They were hit with waves of criticism in the comments. The couple defended themselves, saying that ‘the train goes real slow’ but falling down into a ravine is going to kill you no matter how fast the train you’re standing on is going TBQH.

Last year another Instagram couple, Minaxi and Vishnu, actually made a post warning people to take care when trying to get that epic shot. Their Instagram post told their followers: ‘did you know that wind gusts can be FATAL??? ☠️ Is our life just worth one photo?’. A few months later they tragically fell to their death while taking a selfie in Yosemite National Park.

CHASING SUNSETS or CHASING LIKES ??? 😛 … Sooo today on #socialmediabadasstribe we are talking about limits of #doitforthegram.😶Yeah sure it can be limitless but guys, we reaaaallly need to have boundaries(this is handy as life lessons too but we will revisit that later😉) A lot of us including yours truly is a fan of daredevilry attempts of standing at the edge of cliffs ⛰and skyscrapers🌆, but did you know that wind gusts can be FATAL??? ☠️ Is our life just worth one photo? … When we squirm at another selfie attempt gone south 😱 from a skyscraper, let’s remember to save that in our core memory 🧠 and not the memory dump 🛢(I am still on the Inside Out 🎬 train y’all 😬) Same applies when we get our knickers in a twist and hog a spot till we get the perfect shot🙄 I know I know, I am guilty as charged for all of this 🤦‍♀️ and if I didn’t have Mr. Two Goody Shoes, Vishnu 🤭 with me, I am not even sure if I would have written this post. … Let us all try to be responsible digital citizens and use our “numbers” to be transparent and honest, shall we?🤗 None of us is perfect and the more we accept it and share our flaws as much as our wins, we are one step closer to creating a sane social media without the scary brouhahas.💕✨ … Still there?👀 Woohoo, a backflip is in order, or wait maybe a pizza? 🍕 What about a unicorn ice-cream 🦄 🍦 with some Disney-approved cotton candy 🍭🍬 and pixie dust infused sprinkles 🧚‍♀️ if…..IF you could tell me the one time you were effin’ proud of being candid and real AF in social media? 😎 … PS – Not sponsored but sweatshirt is from @radearthsupply • • • #grandcanyonnps #northrim #instagramaz #visitarizona #travelarizona #shotzdelight #discovertheroad #usaroadtrip #visittheusa #outdoorsusa #exploretheusa #womenwhoexplore #iamtb #radparks #thediscoverer #gtgi #sheisnotlost #wearetravelgirls #hikemore #radgirlslife #travelreality #dreamscape @womenwhoexplore @visit_arizona @visittheusa @shotzdelight

If you think that surely no one would be stupid enough to try to re-enact these dangerous poses for themselves then you’re forgetting the trend of eating laundry detergent pods in 2018, and the ‘Bird Box Challenge’, where people drove blind-folded. Clearly, Instagram influencers need to be more wary of what the word ‘influence’ means and post responsibly.
