When you think ‘summer’, you think fun, sun, and dancing to the hottest beats of the season. Music is an essential part of any get-together, so getting the playlist just right is crucial.
Don’t want your guests bouncing in favour of a party with a better soundtrack, but can’t afford to fork out the big bucks for a DJ? No worries. Just do it yourself with a Spotify playlist featuring the most popular artists and songs from the past year.
DJ Spotify’s Recommendations
Based on Spotify’s local and international streaming trends, there are definitely a few artists that are must-haves on your playlist. No party is complete without Drake, for instance. He’s the most streamed global artist on Spotify’s Top Global Songs of Summer 2018 (Northern hemisphere) list, as well as the most streamed artist and songs by South African audiences* (since launch).
We’re also loving local artists such as Nasty C, AKA and Jeremy Loops – the top 3 most streamed SA artists since launch. Shekhinah was a firm favourite, coming in at number 6 and taking the title of the most streamed South African female artist (by South African audiences).
Head to Spotify to kick off your playlists with some Fela In Versace (AKA), Suited (Shekhinah) or Jungle (Nasty C). In the mood for something new? Get some inspiration on what the current faves are. If you’re already signed up to Spotify, let the ‘Discover Weekly’ and ‘New Music Friday‘ features guide you.
How to Create the Perfect Playlist
Make Your Selection
You’ve spent hours agonising over everything from the decorations to the snacks, but you just can’t figure out the playlist. Whether your event is a relaxed get-together or a fancy AF cocktail party, your choice of music will likely have the largest overall impact on the vibe. Don’t stress! Divide your evening into separate components, such as cocktails, dinner, and dancing. This will help you find the perfect Spotify playlist to set the tone and enhance your guests’ experience.
To create a playlist, go to www.spotify.com and follow these simple steps:
- Sign up (if you haven’t already)
- Click ‘new playlist’ on the bottom left hand corner
- Use Spotify’s browse feature to explore different genres & moods
- Tap the ‘more’ button (…)
- Tap ‘add’ to playlist
- Repeat step 4 and 5 until you have the perfect playlist down
Let the Beats Play On
No one likes awkward silences, so give your playlist that professional DJ touch by making use of Spotify’s crossfade feature. Crossfade lets you eliminate the silence between tracks so your music, and your party, never stops. This feature can be found under advanced settings on your app.
To enable Crossfade:
- Click on the menu next to your name
- Go into ‘settings’
- Scroll down and click show ‘advanced settings’
- Under playback, switch ‘crossfade songs’ on – button will turn green
- Move the slider to select the desired crossfade length
Get your guests in on some collab action! Have them RSVP with their top three favourite tracks, and add these to the playlist. This way everyone will have their moment when their anthem comes on. You can achieve this by creating a ‘collaborative playlist’.
To create a collaborative playlist:
- Click the ‘more’ button (…) on a playlist
- Select collaborative playlist – make sure there is a tick next to it
- You can share your playlist as a link to include in your e-invite, or use it on your fave social media platforms
As any DJ knows, everyone loves to make a special request. So when that time of the evening comes where someone wants to confess their love via serenade or relive their high-school anthems, why not give your guests access to a tablet? They can then browse the song of their choice and add it to the collaborative playlist.
Personalise Your Playlist
What if your guests end up on the wrong playlist? After all, there are bound to be a couple of ‘Hottest Party Bangers 2018’ floating around. Avoid confusion by personalising your playlist. You can upload a picture of the invitation and even add important event info in the description box. Best of all the party playlist lives on – you can add the link to the thank you mails or pass onto guests after the event.
