One of the most toxic aspects of social media is the gratification we get from the number of likes we get on our posts, as we compare it to others that we follow. Instagram wants to change this for us by taking away like amounts on posts. So you can still like others’ posts, and you can see how many likes you have received but you won’t be able to see other people’s like amounts. You get me?
Basically, according to TechCrunch, the number of likes will still affect how the algorithm will rank a post in the feed. According to the Head of Instagram, Adam Mosseri they will also make the follower count less prominent in order refocus Instagram on self-expression instead of popularity.
In an official statement Instagram said:
‘Later this week, we’re running a test in Canada that removes the total number of likes on photos and video views in Feed, Permalink pages and Profile. We are testing this because we want your followers to focus on the photos and videos you share, not how many likes they get.’
A small percentage of Canadian users would have seen the changes in the feed throughout the month of May with a notice at the top which read ‘a change to how you see Likes’. The announcement of the change was made at Facebook’s F8 conference.
Although many have pointed out the problem that this creates for influencers and brands looking to work with them, Instagram spokesperson said to TechCrunch that ‘We understand that this is important for many creators, and while this test is in exploratory stages, we are thinking through ways for them to communicate value to their brand partners.’
We are waiting for more information about these interesting new changes.
