The WTF, the Winning, the Wild – These Are the Most Unforgettable Looks From the Met Gala 2019

The ins and outs of fashion’s biggest night!

Fashion’s biggest night of the year, the Met Gala, saw the notoriously tricky theme of ‘Camp: Notes on Fashion’ but proved to provide us with one of the most interesting red carpets of the 2019. The theme, that was described as ‘The essence of Camp is its love of the unnatural: of artifice and exaggeration’ saw a movement to the OTT, the satirical, the tongue-in-cheek and the unexpected.

From a plethora of pink to gender-bending style, here’s who came to the party with their looks at this year’s Met Gala.

Here Are The Most Unforgettable Looks From The 2019 Met Gala:

Most Outfits in One: Lady Gaga in Brandon Maxwell

When we heard Lady Gaga was attending this year’s Met Gala, we were excited to see what the star would come up with. Considering her reputation for OTT looks and her love for anything but the ordinary, she may just be the poster child for the theme ‘Camp’. Ladies, she did not disappoint. Gaga attended in not one but THREE outfits (four if you include her lingerie reveal) all in one! She arrived in a larger-than-life hot pink cape, then stripped the cape to reveal a voluminous black dress, then removed that to reveal a hot pink body-con dress and then removed THAT to expose a lingerie look. Read more about it here.

Best ‘King of Camp’ Look As Declared By Twitter: Harry Styles in Gucci

Harry Styles, who was a co-chair at this year’s Met, was praised by Twitter for pulling through (we expected no less!) with a red-carpet look that completely pushed gender boundaries. The singer wore a nipple-baring black sheer shirt, super high-waisted black trousers and a single dangling pearl earrings. His hair was slicked black and he had multi-coloured nail-polish. A fan on Twitter even declared that his look embodied a ‘fuck toxic masculinity’ message.

Most Likely To Fit In At The Rio De Janeiro Carnival: Kendall and Kylie Jenner in Versace

But also, the most ‘twinning-it’ moment award went to Kendall and Kylie who coordinated their outfits and both wore bright feathered dresses. Although Twitter had a lot to say about their looks resembling Scooby Doo’s Velma and Daphne, the sisters from Ella Enchanted AND the twins from White Chicks, we think their brightly feathered looks came straight out of the Rio De Janeiro Carnival. We kinda love that they opted for something a little different to their usual ‘naked’ looks and that they owned colour.

Most Like An Actual Red-Carpet: Cardi B in Thom Browne

Cardi B officially took home the award for the longest train. The rapper wore a floor-length gown in a deep red, that needed a ten-man entourage to carry and was definitely also ‘the heaviest dress’ at this year’s Met. Of course the internet went crazy with comparisons which included both a duvet cover and red blood cells. It did make for a great photo-op though.

Most Psychedelic: Lupita Nyong’o in Versace

Lupita has never been one to steer clear of colour so in a way, her multi-colour Met look was a natural fit. The actress quite literally brought the rainbow to the red-carpet in a pink star-pattern dress with bold shoulder ruffles and accessorised with a matching fan. We love that she finished off the look with a halo of golden Afro picks in her hair.

Biggest Flop: Karlie Kloss in Dapper Dan and Gucci

The most-dragged-on-Twitter outfit of the night? Karlie Kloss did not impress fans with her metallic gold mini dress and puffy black sleeves. We aren’t quite sure how her look channelled the ‘Camp’ theme and people were saying she looked like she bought a Fashion Nova Twix bar costume. Mean, but come on Karlie, the world was your oyster!

Best South-African Export: Trevor Noah

Our man, Trevor, proved that you can make a statement on the red-carpet in *wait for it* – a white tee. The comedian wore a ‘this is all a formality’ t-shirt under a black suit. A dose of irony, anyone?

Most Dramatic Entrance: Billy Porter in The Blonds

Stage performer, pop singer and actor, Billy, was carried into the Met by six shirtless men wearing shiny gold pants and headpieces. In a theatrical nod to Ancient Egypt and Cleopatra, Billy wore a custom bejewelled catsuit with dramatic real-life gold wings and a 24-karat gold headpiece. Wowza!

Most Unexpected Shoe Choice: Serena Williams in Atelier Versace and Nike Sneakers

Serena wore a stunning yellow gown by Atelier Versace and, in an unexpected plot twist, paired it with neon green (a similar shade to a tennis ball) Nike x Off-White Air Force One sneakers, embracing her sporty roots for this evening’s theme. We loved this cheeky surprise.

Most Naked: Kim Kardashian in Thierry Mugler

Of course at least one celeb had to wear a ‘naked dress’ and we’re not surprised it was Kim! Miss Kardashian-West fully embraced the naked trend in a skin-tight nude dress adorned with beads and sequins. Pre-Met, Kim teased on Twitter that her look was inspired by Sophia Loren’s sexy wet-n-wild look in the 1957 film, Boy on a Dolphin. She even came with matching wet waves to match her ‘wet’ look.

Most Like An Actual Chandelier: Katy Perry in Moschino

We will definitely not be forgetting Katy Perry’s quite literal chandelier look. The singer lit up the red-carpet, dripping in jewels in the form of a chandelier gown, complete with light bulbs. When asked how she will sit in her rather adventurous look, she rolled her eyes and responded: ‘you don’t sit at the Met Gala’ and then continued to sing Sia’s Chandelier.
