The shoes and accessories that every fashion insider will wear in 2020

The only BS we need = bag + shoes.

Anyone else feel like they love shoes and accessories more than actual clothing? Raise your snakeskin boots, sis. After all, 1. they always fit 2. they don’t need washing 3. they have the ability to transform an outfit from basic to bougie in under five. Also, who doesn’t feel like they can kick butt when they’re wearing their favourite pair of shoes, or, feel like a total kween when clutching onto a totally adorbs handbag?

As we visit 2020, let’s revisit the shoes and accessories that will be giving us all the fashion feels this year. Scroll down to read about the trends that will be making their way into our shoe closets and accessory drawers.

These are 2020’s biggest shoes and accessories trends

1 Chunky chain necklaces

Neck candy comprised of (usually) gold chain links, reminiscent of ’80s hip hop subculture, are here to slay this 2020! Wear yours layered with others, or on its own, as your décolletage’s focal piece. FYI, this a trend that pretty much doesn’t ever go out of style (score!), which means investing in a gold or gold-plated piece won’t be an impulsive idea.

2 Square-toe shoes

Some say it was Bottega Veneta, who came out with a collection of super-cool square-toed shoes last year, that made this trend a *major* hit amongst the fashion crowd. As a result, sleek, square-toed: mules, naked sandals, loafers and even pumps are literally on every fashion girl’s wishlist. We dub this 2020’s biggest shoe trend.

3 Chain belts

Add some bling bling to your belt loops (call it ‘jewellery for your waist or hips’) with chain belts remaining a belt fave this season. The trend comes with a significant sense of nostalgia, with brands like Chanel and Versace having popularised this style over the years. And it’s *peaking* again, folks. Style hack: If you’re lucky, you may find a chain-belt gem in your fave vintage stores, due to its throwback DNA.

4 Posh pearls

Not your granny’s pearls — but something similar. Pearls have been making appearances on and off the runway in newer shapes and styles, such as earl cuffs, necklaces and even adorned on bags, shoes and eyewear.

5 Le slouchy sac

Another Bottega-born trend is the ultra-slouchy leather bag. This minimalistic silhouette sees a ‘soft hobo’ style (remember the hobo bag!?) and can some variations can have a resemble a ‘croissant-like’ shape (which is why these are also known as ‘croissant bags’). We love its versatility and rather spacious nature after a year that saw the micro-bag trend explode. Bonus: you’ll be able to fit your week planner and mid-morning snack in it.

5 Shoes worn over pants

This Instagram-born trend is actually more of a styling hack because it involves lacing up your strappy heels over your pants. It was seen on the recent Valentino, JW Anderson and Isabel Marant runways and it’s been adopted by fashion influencers worldwide! It’s sneaky, clever and super-cool all at once. Go on, try it.

6 Minimal shoes

Or, should we call them ‘toe-ish shoes’ because they involve thong-style shoes and the kinds that highlight your toes. Some call them ‘naked sandals’. You may be somewhat undecided but it’s fashun, Susan. We’ve already joined the simple-meets-strappy shoe party. Join us?

7 Knee-high boots

We all witnessed the revolution of the thigh-high-boot. Some were obsessed, others not so much. Well, this year’s version = knee-high boots or just-under-the-knee boots. Specifically those in bright colour, animal-print embossed leather and even metallics. And, these boots were meant for *striking a street-style pose*.

8 Tough-girl boots

Chunky, utility-inspired boots may just be this year’s biggest boot trend! (Ok, after square-toe shoes). Or, should we say ‘anti-trend’ trend because they’re forever classics, actually. We’re talking: shoes that are so comfy they make us *dance with joy*, like combat boots, Dr. Martens’ iterations, chunky Chelsea boots with treaded platform soles, buckle details and all the heavy-duty-gone-fashionable footwear out there.

9 The bigger the hoop…

…the cooler the ear party, because supersized hoops are the whole damn thing RN! From the runways of Proenza Schouler to Oscar de la Rente, to influencers like Xenia Adonts and Emrata, upgrade your jewellery box with large hooped earrings made from metal, acetate and even jewel encrusted. And, OFC, we all know that Bonang gave this trend the nod years ago —  in fact, it’s her accessories signature.
