Black Coffee Is Opening an Art School Designed by Virgil Abloh

Taking over the world one African-inspired electro beat at a time

DJ Black Coffee has been taking over the world one African-inspired electro beat at a time. He has become friends with many industry heavyweights, including the newly appointed Louis Vuitton menswear artistic director Virgil Abloh. They are now joining forces and opening an art school in South Africa.

The DJ spoke to Billboard and mentioned how the art school, which will be based in Johannesburg, would be designed by his friend Virgil.

Virgil and leading South African architecture firm SAOTA will be collaborating to create the institution. ‘We’ve been working on building a music, art and fashion school in a deserted part of Johannesburg,’ Black Coffee said.

Local artist Nelson Makamo and clothing designer Laduma Ngxokolo will also be part of this project. Black Coffee is trying to make the deserted parts of Johannesburg places where children will be able to create in the fields of art, music and fashion.

Once the school is completed, they will be working towards creating a precinct dedicated to the arts. ‘The opportunities and spaces will offer cultural experiences, boutique stores, restaurants and a learning centre,’ Black Coffee said.

We are so excited to see the results of this project. A Black Coffee and Virgil Abloh collaboration seems like a match made in art heaven. This school will be exactly what our country needs and, with the creativity of these two powerhouses coming together, we are sure it is going to be amazing!
