…consider yourself schooled?

style-fashion-trends-2020

2020 is here and it’s time to get excited about the fashion trends that will be making major appearances throughout the year. The biggest fashion trends you can expect to see in 2020:

1 Puff sleeves

Puff sleeves continue to reign in 2020! This trend sees puffy oversized sleeves that give off feminine feels in a more structured way. The more voluminous the sleeves, the better, because the appeal lies in the drama this trend exudes. And, here’s a little trick – when snapping a pic for the ‘Gram, pull and puff out your sleeves further to exaggerate their silhouette. The result? Utter *visual splendour*.

2 Polka dots

2019 was the year of animal print and this year it’s all about the polka-dot aesthetic. We all know about that spotty Zara dress that went viral mid-2019 (and that scored Zara’s parent brand, Inditex, major $$$). The proof is in the polkas. We’ll all be ‘hot for them spots’ this 2020 with polka-dot everything ruling the style scene.

3 Billowy dresses

Long trapeze-like maxi dresses are a major must-have this 2020. Whether you opt for a boho-esque print, bright monochrome hue, cinched at the waist or loose-fitting throughout, this easy-to-wear style makes it a lazy girl’s fave. Pair yours with grungy combat boots for a trendy ’90s take, or with strappy naked sandals for a summery ‘fit.

4 Modern suiting

This year suits are being recreated with cool-girl energy. Think deconstructed suits, oversized suit jackets styled with bra tops, skirt suits, Bermuda-style shorts suits and anything-but-boring tailoring. When it comes to the colour palette and texture, we’re seeing an emphasis on pastel hues and punchy colours, in linen and lightweight fabrics.

5 Bra tops

Crop bra tops = 2020’s wardrobe essential. Bra-style tops were all over the spring-summer 2020 runways and the best part is that they can be worn in so many different ways. We’re talking: popped under a denim or suit jacket, paired with a silky slip skirt or cargo pants and more — the options are endless. A bra worn as an actual top is no longer risky, fam, it’s mandatory.

6 Bermuda shorts

Bermuda shorts are back! These knee-length shorts that are usually belted at the waist have been dubbed ‘mom shorts’ — and we’re totally on board. We’re seeing both tailored and relaxed-fitting versions, monochrome vs print, and now, in a satin form (we spy the ‘Staud’ runway).

7 New crochet

Crochet in traditional earthy-hues as well as in bright punchy colours is having its moment in 2020. Yes, it gives off major wanderlust vibes but you can also wear this woven fabric to work, brunch and everything in between.

8 Slow fashion

Although sustainable fashion is definitely not a ‘trend’, we had to add it to our list because the world is slowly seeing eye-to-eye on the harmful effects the clothing industry has on the environment. Ways to become a more conscious shopper? Support local design, go thrift shopping and wear second-hand clothing, opt for garments made from natural fibres such as organic cotton and linen, host or attend clothing-swap parties and buy less, rent more (yes, rental fashion is a thing!).
