ICYMI, back in 2015, adidas joined forces with Parley, an environmental awareness group, to create the world’s first high-quality, lightweight running sneakers, recycled almost purely from ocean waste. The shoe was dubbed ‘UltraBOOST Uncaged Parley’. They had originally launched their creation in 2015 in a 3D-printed format and started selling the product from the end of November 2016.
Fast forward to now, and they have bought out not only the coolest running sneaks but light-weight lifestyle kicks that are TDF. Plus, they come in kids’ sizes too! That’s eco-innovation at it’s finest.

adidas x Parley sneakers decoded:
- Upper part of the sneaker = 5% recycled polyester, and 95% is plastic waste collected from the ocean (mainly from the waters around the Maldives)
- The rest of the shoe (laces, sole, and lining) is made mostly from recycled materials
Fun fact: Eleven plastic bottles have been used to create each pair of sneakers! How crazy? Needless to say, we are very impressed.
‘Nobody can save the oceans alone. Each of us can play a role in the solution. It’s in the hands of the creative industries to reinvent faulty materials, products, and business models. The consumer can boost the demand for change,’ says Cyrill Gutsch, the founder of Parley for the Oceans. #Amen
