7 Sneaky Ways to Find Out How Tall Your Tinder Match Is

‘So, uh, have you ever played basketball?’

If you’re anything like me, your biggest fear on a dating app is wondering who is really behind the charming online profile. And, as a tallish woman, my main concern is showing up to a date and finding out the dude basically makes eye contact with my collarbone.

Now, I’m not height-shaming, but it is something I’d like to consider in the preliminary rounds of dating someone – especially on platforms that allow me to swipe right and left strictly on looks with a sentence or two of personality.

Luckily, some dating apps have since uploaded a feature that allows singles to include their height among other details in the profile. But what about the dating apps that don’t?

Here are 7 ways you can figure out how tall your match is without directly asking them and sounding suuuper shallow.

1 Ask them about their high school glory days

If they played basketball, were they a point guard or a center? Huge difference in heights, ladies. Did they not participate in sports because they were, like, too short? You can get a lot of responses here. Bonus points if they played a sport in college. You can almost always track down their team’s roster online, which is the vital information that includes their heights. You’re welc!

2 Tell them you can’t reach the paper towels

Next time you get the, ‘What’s up?’ text, tell your crush that you were at the grocery store and it’s super embarrassing, but you had to ask a stranger to reach the paper towels off the top shelf for you. Your match will either respond asking how tall you are (which then makes it completely acceptable to ask for his or her height too), or they’ll respond with a, ‘Oh, I’d totally reach the paper towels for you,’ and that def means they’re tall and confident about reaching anything you want, girl!

3 Talk about your super new, cute shoes that happen to be stilettos

Mention the high-heeled shoes you just bought that make you well over three inches taller. Something like, ‘Wow! I just bought these shoes and they’re super cute but they make me look like I’m like 5’10, ha. ;)’ And see what they say. They’ll probably respond with their height too considering you just casually dropped in yours. Easy peazy!

4 Evaluate the group pics

There’s probably a good chance he has no idea how to make a solid dating profile without including pics with his bros. The average dude is 5’9 according to Healthline (and 5’4 for women!), so use this as a scale to approximate how he or she stacks up next to their friends.

5 Evaluate his pics with women

Again, if he’s a dude, he probably doesn’t understand that it’s not the most appropriate thing to have a couple pic of an ex on the current dating profile. Whatever. But is he taller than her or are they around the same height? Hint: If they’re dressed nicely, consider that she’s probably wearing heels so it’s making her taller!

6 Use your detective skills and scale that mirror selfie

I really hope they didn’t take a bathroom mirror selfie, but if they did, the door is probably hanging in the background. Scale your match’s size to the height of a door and voila, you have a makeshift height scale.

7 Put your height in your bio

This may prevent peeps from swiping on you if they’re shorter in the first place, or it could be a great entry for conversation among swipers who are confident about their own height. Zing!
