#ICYMI: COSMO SA Makes History and Headlines With Our Feb 2018 Laverne Cox Cover

We’ve gone international! 🌍

Listen up, COSMO Girls! It’s time to pop your bottles because we’ve officially gone international with our Feb #SayYestoLove issue featuring Orange is the New Black star, Laverne Cox.

Want to know why Laverne is on our radar? Peep the Five Times Laverne was Inspirational AF.

Already familiar with the glamazon? We bet you didn’t know these five things about the fire performer and activist.

Not only are we making waves with some amazing content celebrating queer, gay, lesbian, non-binary, trans, and non-conforming love, but it’s the first time in HISTORY that an openly transgender woman graces the cover of any COSMO and mainstream African magazine.

At COSMO we’re all about firsts, and this one takes the cake. Think we’re the only ones raving about our cover star at home? Think again. Not only did we trend in Cape Town, but we’ve been given shout-outs from Huffington Post, E! News, Mashable, Bustle, Perez Hilton, Daily Beast, and People.

Editor-in-chief and Head #GirlBoss, Holly Meadows, told Paper Magazine  what this issue is all about and why COSMO is the perfect platform to give the message that love is beautiful, no matter what form is comes in. Holly says this issue is all about an attempt to ‘disrupt hetero-normative ideas around February and Valentine’s Day and look at love in 2018 – including acceptance of self, others and non-binary relationships.’

Holly said Laverne is just the right spokesperson to introduce our alternative issue as ‘the world’s most vocal trans poster girl and an activist for the intersection of race, class and gender identities, challenging toxic masculinity, white supremacy and the misrepresentation of trans people.’

”Your voice matters, the truth of who you know yourselves to be matters.’- Laverne Cox in exclusive interview, Cosmopolitan SA

It’s the first time that a mainstream magazine, with a name so synonymous with pop culture, has featured a diverse, dynamic cast of real people with valid identities that get glossed over in a heteronormative world dominated by heterosexual desire.

‘Trans women deserve to be loved out in the open and in the light,’ Cox wrote in COSMO. ‘Your voice matters, the truth of who you know yourselves to be matters. The truth will set you free!’

We’re taking a look of what it means to live your truth, exist outside the expected, and subvert the gaze to experience love unconfined or unbound by convention.

It’s an issue filled with creativity, colour and imagination, and we asked activists, influencers, and vocal advocates for the LGBTIQ+ community to share their ideas on love, life and everything in between. Elle van Der Berg, Desire Marea, Fela Gucci, K-$, Sydney Davy, Glow Mammii, Angel-Ho, and more invite you to say #YesToLove and we’re all for it.

So often LGTBIQ+ issues are framed and defined by struggle in the media but this time we’re made an ode to love in all its shapes, forms and textures and inviting you to welcome the new age of romance with open arms.

Will you take the plunge with us? Ready to make history and see where this love takes you? Make sure to get the copy of our Feb 2018 issue whilst it’s still piping hot.
