White House advisor and heiress, Ivanka Trump, says that a trip to Africa would inspire President Donald Trump. She recently visited Ethiopia and the Ivory Coast to promote women empowerment, and had this to say about it:
“Our commitment to Africa is clear. I’ve been deeply, deeply inspired by my trip here. And I think he will be as well… I’m very excited about continuing my work to specifically focus on advocating and advancing the role of women on this continent and beyond.” – Ivanka Trump, Okay Africa reports.

#ICYMI: On my first trip to Africa to advance our Women’s Global Development and Prosperity Initiative, we visited 2 countries in 4 days carrying out 8 W-GDP deliverables. From productive meetings with leadership to hearing firsthand from local women entrepreneurs and coffee and cocoa farmers, the trip was deeply impactful and we learned a great deal. Our mission to empower 50 million women globally to achieve their full economic potential is just getting started! #WGDP
Here are four reasons we’re skeptical about the Trump administration/family’s ‘interest’ in Africa:
1. Their Women’s Rights Policies are Shocking
The Trump administration has global anti-abortion plans, they have no regard for reproductive health and rights. The Anti-Choice Mexico City policy bans funding for abortion services overseas, and this is something they are looking to expand. This will mean that healthcare centres may be forced to shut down, leaving fewer STI testing and birth control outlets.
In Africa (and everywhere tbh), we need more access to these, not less. Resources are limited and unsafe, illegal abortions are already a big problem. By taking away a woman’s right to choose what to do with her body, they are not promoting gender equality or women empowerment. They are compromising it.
2. Donald Trump called African countries “shithole countries”
We haven’t forgotten about when the POTUS made reference to immigrants from “shithole counties“, when alluding to Haiti and African nations. If this doesn’t show you exactly what he thinks of these places, nothing will. It’s indicative of an Imperialist mindset and shows a disturbing lack of humanity (and historic accountability).
Donald Trump reportedly said:
“Why do we want all these people from Africa here? They’re shithole countries … We should have more people from Norway.”
3. Their Foreign Aid Game is Fickle AF
President Trump has been trying to cut off foreign aid to a number of African countries since last year. This includes South Africa, and all other countries unwilling to vote with the US at the United Nations, reports News24.
4. There Other Possible Agenda Here (Coffee, China and Exploiting Key Economies)
These two ‘shithole countries’, IOL reports, are not randomly picked. Based on the last year, Ivory Coast and Ethiopia are among Africa’s foremost economies. These two countries, Victor Kgomoeswana writes, are producing coffee (Ethiopia) and cocoa (Ivory Coast) – this is something that America needs and “consumes a lot of”. Starbucks has reportedly tried to exploit Africa’s resources without due credit and compensation before.
The US, while still the largest economy in the world, is competing with China in the new scramble for Africa. These two countries represent key economies. And as Kgomoeswana comments: “one of its ways to keep Africa close to the US ” is by “focusing on the most topical issue in the world: women empowerment”.
Watch Ivanka Trump Speak on How Inspired She Is:
Ivanka Trump said that the White House should be judged by its actions toward Africa, a continent that her father, President Donald Trump, has “privately disparaged”, AP News reports. However, neither Ivanka nor Donald Trump has addressed the President’s comments on Africa.
All platitudes aside, we see you 👀
