The call for tax-free sanitary products has been on everyone’s lips and rightfully so. Too many of South Africa’s young women are burdened with the cost of keeping themselves clean and healthy during their menstruation period.
Giant Retailer Shoprite Now Selling Tax Free Sanitary Products
Well it would be appear that big businesses are hearing the call from the public. The giant retailer Shoprite announced that it would be selling tax free sanitary pads. This means that during this period, customers can save on the 15% VAT price. However this only goes for Ultrex pads which will now go on sale for R10.99 – indefinitely. How amazing?!

This comes after the announcement by National Treasury that sanitary products will be added to the zero vat list earlier this month. In the month of May Cosmo SA took on the #TamponTaxMust campaign where we called on you to sign the petition. If you missed it in May – do so now. The more signatures, the louder our voices will be together.
Social media users have commended Shoprite for being part of the solution as South Africans wait for the recommendations made by National Treasury to be put in place.

The sanitary product subsidiary will take place indefinitely at Shoprite stores. Perhaps it is time that all giant retailers follow suit and create the opportunity for all women to have financial access to these health products.
