Researchers from Michigan University seem to think so. A new study from the university suggested that readers of the infamous ‘erotica’ had a number of side-effects from reading the book. When they surveyed 715 women aged 18-24 they found that the readers of Fifty Shades (the first book of the series), were more likely to have had verbally or emotionally abusive partners who yelled, swore, or stalked them than non readers. These readers were also more likely to fast or use diet aids.
The women who read the whole series were more likely to report recent binge drinking and having had five or more sexual partners.
Of course role-playing and being in an abusive relationship are two very different things (hint: one is consensual and fun. The other is not). So this survey doesn’t really prove anything.
As we all buckle up and wait in anticipation for the film’s release, we can keep this survey in mind but don’t feel bad if you simply enjoyed the books and have healthy relationships.
