Prosecutors allege a student at the University of Illinois Chicago sexually assaulted a woman because he wanted to reenact scenes from Fifty Shades of Grey.
According to Cook County prosecutors, Mohammad Hossain, 19, allegedly beat and raped a 19-year-old female student as part of an attempt to recreate scenes from the bestselling book and hit film. Police said when Hossain was arrested he told police he was acting out a part of the book and knew that he had done something wrong, theChicago Tribune reports.
During Hossain’s bail hearing, public defender Sandra Bennewitz urged the court to consider that Hossain was active in several campus leadership programs and was on the triathlon team.
“How can someone involved in all that let a movie persuade him to do something like this?” asked Judge Adam Bourgeois Jr.
Beenewitz argued that Hossain maintains the sex was consensual.
According to the Chicago Tribune, prosecutors said the incident occurred on Saturday, after Hossain and the victim went to his dorm room at approximately 5:30 p.m. Prosecutors said the pair had been “intimate” before but were not dating or in a relationship.
At his dorm room, Hossain reportedly asked the victim to strip, which she did, keeping her bra and underwear on. He proceeded to bind her hands and feet and put a necktie in her mouth. He then covered her eyes and stripped her nude.
DNA Info reports that Hossain started hitting the woman with a belt, and she tried to get him to stop:
After several strikes, the woman asked Hossain to stop, saying “no,” “stop,” and “you’re hurting me,” [a police] report said. The woman continued to cry, shake her head and plead with Hossain to stop, [Assistant State’s Attorney Sarah] Karr alleged, but he sexually assaulted her. The woman tried to break free of the restraints several times during the attack, but Hossain held her down each time, Karr added.
The woman was able to get away when Hossain’s roommate came home (prosecutors said Hossain tried to block the door to prevent the roommate from entering). The victim contacted police who later arrested Hossain the same night.
Hossain’s bail was set $500,000. Hossain is barred from UIC’s campus and must must wear an electronic monitoring device if he posts bail.
