Everyone wants their wedding to be a memorable one. For some, this means having a destination wedding on a tropical island surrounded by their nearest and dearest. But that type of ceremony doesn’t come cheap. Fortunately, there is an alternative island just off the coast of Cape Town where you can celebrate your union in style, and with a whole bunch of other people. Yes, Robben Island is taking reservations for couples who want to tie the knot in their annual mass wedding which is hosted on Valentine’s Day each year. And it will *definitely* make a lasting impression.
For the last twenty years, former prison location Robben Island has been hosting mass weddings on Valentine’s Day. A joint statement says: ‘The Department of Home Affairs and the Robben Island Museum partner to make dreams come true for couples who want to get married in style at the former prison which, on the day, is transformed into a lavish wedding venue with an amazing ambiance.

Tomorrow the Robben Island Ferries turn into The Love Boats as they transport a group of happy couples to the island to begin their lives together as husband and wife. One of our favourite days of the year!⠀ ⠀ #LoveOnRobbenIsland #RobbenIsland #history #heritage #VisitCapeTown #travel #tourism #Valentines
‘On the day, couples will arrive at the Nelson Mandela Gateway to catch the ferry in the morning and head to the Robben Island Museum in time for the ceremony that will take place at the Robben Island Chapel. Once the couples have exchanged their nuptials, they will head off to a wedding reception for lunch and thereafter go on a tour of the museum.’
Here’s a cute snap from the 2019 event:
