I need both hands to count the couples I know who had to cancel their weddings over the last few weeks due to the Covid-19 outbreak. Lost deposits aside, it must be incredibly sad to have to postpone, indefinitely, a day that you, your partner, and your families have been looking forward to and planning for such a long time.
Not only was this the case for Capetonian filmmaker Dan Mace and his fiancé Gabi Esterhuizen, but Mace was later diagnosed with Covid-19. After making a full recovery, he decided he couldn’t wait to marry Gabi, and decided to go ahead with the wedding anyway – in a completely charming way. Enter the lockdown wedding, a thing we never thought would be a thing – but here we are.
After what must have been an exhausting night of planning and hustling, Gabi woke up to find that Dan had set up a surprise lockdown wedding in their backyard, guests and all.
Before you call SAPS though, it’s worth noting that these were the guests:
This love story includes rings made of guitar strings, a band, an aisle, and a friend’s head beamed in via Zoom to conduct the ceremony. In a nutshell, it’s the epitome of love in the time of Corona.

Congrats, Gabi and Dan!
