These Insta-worthy SA hotels are worth visiting

The COSMO team visited these stunning hotels so you can get the most fab Insta pics.

If you’re going to fork out for a half-decent hotel this year, better make sure it helps your status updates by checking out these beautiful hotels:

Majeka House – Stellenbosch, Western Cape

Why it’s got the Insta-factor…

Majeka House is an exquisite five-star hotel in Stellenbosch. Everything about it screams ‘luxury’ – you’ll want to take a selfie in every room! I particularly loved the Majeka Lounge. It has a vintage feel – think large armchairs, a wood-burning fireplace and gold ornaments. The beautiful book-themed wallpaper is so lifelike – I thought I was looking at an actual bookcase!

What’s the vibe?

This is definitely a spot where you can relax – I’d suggest lying back on a pool lounger and reading your book while you sip on a cocktail. You can also take a swim in the inviting spa pool, or even catch a Majeka shuttle into town for some wine tasting. You could always have dinner while you’re out but rather stay at the hotel to enjoy a fine-dining meal at Majeka Kitchen, prepared by head chef Lucas Carstens. The rooms are individually decorated (if you can, try book the room with flamingo wallpaper – it’ll add a wow-factor to your Insta pics) and you’ll have your own private balcony or terrace.

Indulging in the buffet breakfast – try their amaze croissants and eggs Benedict. I could sit there all day!

Tinstwalo Atlantic Suite Views
Tinstwalo Atlantic

Why it’s got the Insta-factor…

The location is truly remarkable and makes for enviable Insta-bait. This boutique hotel is perched on the rocks, right beside the ocean, and below the mighty Chapman’s Peak Drive. It is the definition of exclusive.

What’s the vibe?

Truly boutique in nature, the hotel accommodates 24 guests in 10 island suites and a two-bedroom villa. Suites are individually decorated and named after islands like Madagascar, Zanzibar and Antigua. Each suite has its own private deck overlooking the Atlantic and the pebbled beach below. Order food to your room or eat uncomplicated seaside fare in the relaxed restaurant.

Any celebrity guests?

Former COSMO cover star Aisha Baker and her cricket-player husband have stayed here and love the hotel. Aisha even had her babymoon at Tintswalo (PS: they offer tailor-made options for weddings, as well as engagements, honeymoons and anniversaries).

Don’t go home without…

An afternoon spent lazing around at the plunge pool and sundeck. The giant lounge bed is the perfect spot to drink cocktails and daydream.

The Oyster Box – Umhlanga Rocks, KwaZulu-Natal

Why it’s got the Insta-factor…

From the moment you walk into the lobby, you’ll be captivated by the incredible interiors. Antiques, handpainted friezes and woven tapestries are offset by contemporary African art that reflects the richness and diversity of our country. Once you step outside onto the terrace, you’ll be greeted with an epic view of the iconic red-and-white lighthouse and Umhlanga coastline. The photo opportunities are endless.

What’s the vibe?

The hotel exudes old-world charm. There are 86 beautifully decorated rooms, suites and garden villas to choose from, and your every need is catered for – you can even bring your fur baby with you as the hotel is pet-friendly.

Spend your days lazing by the infinity pool on candy-striped sun loungers, sipping on refreshing cocktails (try the Umhlanga Shling) and enjoying the view.

Any celebrity guests?

It has hosted the British royals (including Prince Harry and Prince William), as well as famous stars such as Penélope Cruz and Naomi Campbell. The hotel is also home to a local feline celeb – the adorable (and feisty as hell) resident cat, Skabenga, who’s not shy to take a swipe at you if you’re overly affectionate. You’ve been warned.

Don’t go home without…

Heading to the hotel’s spectacular, award-winning spa. During our stay, bae and I were treated to the 90-minute B | Africa B | Together full-body massage (yip, ninety minutes of absolute bliss). I was so relaxed that I fell asleep … and started snoring! Embarrassing, yes (I was mortified), but a good sign of how calm I felt.

Sanbona Wildlife Reserve – Klein Karoo, Western Cape

Sanbona Gondwana Family Lodge

Why it’s got the Insta-factor…

It’s said to be the Western Cape’s premier wildlife destination. The reserve stretches across 58 000 hectares of open plains (it’s massive), and it gives you a feeling of complete isolation and tranquillity.

The picturesque Cape Fold Mountains and beautiful fynbos provide plenty of Insta-worthy backdrops – and hopefully, you can snap a pic with one of the animals, too (if it’s safe, obvs).

Sanbona Gondwana Deck 2

What’s the vibe?

Sanbona is made up of four luxury lodges, and each one caters for different needs. Our stay at Gondwana Family Lodge was nothing short of spectacular. Since I was travelling with my little girls, this lodge was perfect for us. It is ideal for a family holiday or a weekend getaway with your girl squad. The suite opened out onto a veranda overlooking the Bellair Dam, with the mountains in the distance – absolutely magical.

This is where we spent most of our evenings, stargazing and taking in the breathtaking view. If you’re looking for something more low-key, book a stay at the Dwyka Tented Lodge. It has nine luxury tents, and each has its own private deck and heated Jacuzzi.

Actress, model and musician Milla Jovovich stayed at the Gondwana Family Lodge last year. You can catch a glimpse of her safari experience on her Insta Story highlights: @millajovovich.

Don ’t go home without…

Experiencing the incredible wildlife at the reserve. There are two scheduled game drives, at sunrise and sunset. I’d recommend the sunset safari, as you also get to enjoy sundowners while gazing at the stars.

Four Seasons Hotel: The Westcliff – Johannesburg, Gauteng

Why it’s got the Insta-factor…

The Westcliff is perched on a hillside in the heart of Johannesburg. Although it is located in one of South Africa’s busiest cities, you’ll feel like you’re staying at a private resort.

For the best Insta opportunities, stay at the hotel between September and November when the beautiful jacaranda trees are in full bloom.

What’s the vibe?

There are 105 guest rooms and 12 suites, and each room has its own balcony where you can relax with a good book and enjoy the magnificent view of the city. Dining options include View (they serve avant-garde cuisine) and Westcliff Deli (you can indulge in yummy French-style snacks). You can also grab a light salad or sandwich at Après-Spa before or after a relaxing massage. The spa offers deluxe facials and massages, and there is even a spa suite where you and your partner can enjoy a 150-minute skin treatment.

Don’t go home without…

Having a mimosa at the braai inspired Flames restaurant, which is situated on a massive terrace that overlooks the City of Gold.
