Pantone have chosen the colour for 2020, and the reason behind it is deep, man

Bring on the blues.

Pantone Classic Blue

It’s that time of year where a company decides what colour everything needs to be for the next 365 days. Pantone has announced their colour of the year for 2020, and not only is it beautiful it’s also kinda meaningful.

Pantone doesn’t make its selection purely based on what colour they’d like Country Road to make their tote bags in that year. The Pantone colour experts ‘comb the world looking for new colour influences,’ This includes films in production, popular travel destinations, new technologies, social media, and socioeconomic conditions.

This year was the Year of Coral. It was chosen to symbolise ‘our innate need for optimism and joyful pursuits’ but mainly it meant lots of cute coral lip glosses were launched. The colour for 2020 is calming and timeless (and more appropriate for an eyeliner than a lip gloss TBH): Classic Blue.

Pantone describes the colour as ‘elegant in its simplicity’. Classic Blue is restful, tranquil and the same colour as the sky at dusk. ‘Instilling calm, confidence, and connection, this enduring blue hue highlights our desire for a dependable and stable foundation on which to build as we cross the threshold into a new era,’ says Pantone.

It seems Pantone has read the room and noted that everyone is stressed about the future. Climate change is real, technology is scary, and we’re never going to be able to afford to buy a house. ‘We are living in a time that requires trust and faith,’ said Pantone Colour Institute executive director Leatrice Eiseman. ‘It is this kind of constancy and confidence that is expressed by PANTONE 19-4052 Classic Blue, a solid and dependable blue hue we can always rely on.’
