This South African hotel has the honour of being one of the most Instagrammed bathrooms in the world

#bathroomselfie gooooals.

The humble bathroom used to be universally accepted as the most private room in the house. But, probably due to a combination of everyone’s current obsession with skincare routines and millennials’ disregard for keeping any element of their lives private, bathroom selfies are now totally normal. In fact, there are over 1.6 million #bathroomselfie posts on Instagram.

But not just any bathroom will do for a #bathroomsofinstagram post; it needs to be #goals too, you know? We’re talking bespoke tiles, views for days, luxurious baths, and no visible toilet brushes. Mira Showers analysed Instagram data to discover which hotel bathrooms in the world are being photographed the most, and a Cape Town hotel cracked the top ten list as well as two other African spots.

The top 5 bathroom-themed tags are: #bathroomgoals, #bathroomsoftheworld, #hotelbathroom, #bathtubgoals, #bathroomview. Mira Showers noted the hotels that appeared the most in these posts and compiled the top ten most popular ones. All the hotels have incredible views, from the skyscrapers of Hong Kong to the Namib desert, and are all expensive AF too. They also noted the average amount of likes a photo at each location would get you, ‘cos that’s what really matters here TBH.

These are the Africa-based hotels that made the list:

Complementing the Zeitz Museum of Contemporary Art below it, The Silo Hotel is beautifully designed and decorated with contemporary African art. Their bathrooms feature massive windows, free-standing bathtubs, art deco chandeliers, and a whole lot of natural light (‘cos no selfie deserves nasty fluorescent lighting). We don’t know what’s more iconic: the view of Table Mountain and Lion’s Head or the Thomas Heatherwick-designed geometric windows that frame it.

Cost per night in peak season: about R63 000

Most hotels on this list are crisp, clean and modern. The Zannier in Sonop is a refreshing break from matte gold tap fittings and baby pink accents with its wooden details and desert views. The hotel is actually a luxury camp, made up of ultra opulent ‘solid’ tents (no hammering in pegs required).

Cost per night in peak season: about R15 100

The island of Felicite is a helicopter ride away from the mainland and home to the Six Senses Zil Payson resort of 35 private villas. If it’s pristine beaches and epic snorkelling sessions you’re after, Six Senses is your spot. And if it’s clout you’re interested in, Six Senses is also your spot: a photo in one of their bathrooms gets around 2409 likes. This could be thanks to the ocean view, the palm trees peeking in the windows and/or the massive, stunning wooden swing that features next to the bathtub.
