We don’t want to speak too soon and scare it away but it looks like the sun is creeping back into our lives – and we are so ready for it. Warmer weather means not having to ruin every outfit with a pair of black tights and unpacking our bikinis, plus it’s officially ice-cream time. YAY. Use the good weather as an excuse to invite your crush on an ice-ream date or go alone and #TreatYourself.
Here are some of the best ice-cream spots in the country RN:
Johannesburg: Paul’s Homemade Ice Cream
The menu at Paul’s reads like a list of all the greatest flavours on earth: Birthday Cake, Roasted Banana and Nutella, Peppermint Crisp Tart, Apple Pie… They’ve even managed to make an ice cream flavoured to taste like those White Rabbit sweets! Most importantly, everything is served in extremely Instagrammable ceramics and cones. You can find Paul’s in Rosebank, Hyde Park, Sandton and Parkhurst.
Cape Town: Unframed
Picture the ultimate ice-ream parlour, then picture its exact opposite and you will have a good mental image of Kloof Street ice-cream shop Unframed. Its decor is minimal and the flavours are unusual, like beetroot, chocolate and ginger (that’s all one flavour, BTW) or turmeric latte, and it works. They always have at least three vegan options on offer, which are so creamy and delicious you will have a hard time telling them apart from the dairy options (really, they even put it to the test).
Hillcrest: Mozart Marvelicious Ice Cream Parlour
Mozart encourages you to get creative and mix it up with your flavour and topping choices. Nothing is too weird so if you’ve always wanted to try sour worms with banana on chocolate ice cream, now’s your chance to do so without judgment. This is also one of the few places in South Africa that serve bubble waffles (those are those extra voluptuous waffles that are used as ice cream cones that you’ve been seeing all over Instagram).
Johannesburg: Pete’s Super Natural Ice Cream
This company prides itself on sourcing only the best ingredients, using pasture-fed cow’s milk and using no artificial colours or flavours. You can order scoops of Pete’s all over the city but our best venue is the Voodoo Lily Café in Birdhaven for its sunny outside area. Or grab a pint from one of its stockists and take it to the park. The best flavour? Popcorn Cream with Torched Marshmallows & Honeycomb is a dreamy combo of sweet and savoury – move aside, salted caramel.
Cape Town: The Ice Cafe
With all these new artisan ice-cream shops popping up, it can be easy to forget the OG, The Ice Cafe. This spot in Kalk Bay has been serving incredible scoops for years and is still one of the best spots to get your gelato fix in the Cape. There is a broad range of amazing flavours, to be enjoyed either on one of their benches or while you stroll down to the beach, which is right across the road.
Durban: Milky Lane
Take a trip down memory lane and visit your favourite ice-cream parlour from your childhood: Milky Lane. Treat your inner kid to an ice-cream sandwich or share one of their killer milkshakes with your date. Something that definitely wasn’t on the menu back in the day are the outrageously decadent hot drinks – and you need to try one. A whole ice-cream sandwich dunked in a warm cup of Milo? Sign us up.
