These days we don’t just want food that tastes good, we want it to look good and served in Instagram-worthy surroundings too. These are our top picks for pretty restaurants where you can enjoy breakfast in style.

Port Elizabeth

The Friendly Stranger

Come try Amy’s Lemon&Blueberry cake, filled with blueberries inside&out…..

A post shared by Friendly Stranger (@thefriendlystranger) on Sep 2, 2016 at 6:13am PDT

Nestled among green hills is the relaxed and welcoming Friendly Stranger. If you’re looking for a wide variety of affordable and fresh food, be sure to stop by this locally run gem in Port Elizabeth. All the food is made from scratch, which can take a little longer than usual, but there is plenty of art to look at, books to read and puzzles to try your hand at while you wait.

Must-try: The Macadamian Cheesecake

Durban

Parc Cafe, Glenwood

Berry and dark chocolate hot cakes with crispy pancetta and creme fraiche #pancetta #chocolate

For lazy days when you don’t want to rush (or when you wake up hungover and craving a greasy fry-up but it’s lunchtime already), a place that serves an all-day breakfast is a life-saver. Parc Café gets it right with everything, from the simple (like its perfectly prepared toast and eggs) to the snazzy (try its soft polenta with parmesan and pancetta). It also offers great alternative options like a yummy vegan burger and soya milk, so you can still enjoy your morning cappuccino without the dairy.

Must-try: Its toasted brioche with homemade curd cheese

Cape Town

Lekker, Kalk Bay

Breakfast for lunch ?? #LekkerKalkBay #KalkBay #CapeTown #vsco #vscocam

A post shared by Lameez Mohd (@lameezmohd) on Dec 29, 2015 at 4:20am PST

Situated on the main road of the scenic Kalk Bay, this brightly coloured restaurant is always buzzing and always hits the spot. Its build-your-own breakfast option (aka the Breakfast of Champions) is a well-priced way to get exactly what you want and is best eaten with one of its creamy coffees. If you have a sweet tooth when it comes to breakfast, try its French toast (made with a croissant!) or one of its many freshly baked treats on display.

Must-try: The homemade carrot cake, best enjoyed at a window seat with a view of the sea

Johannesburg

Voodoo Lily Café, Birdhaven

#breakfasts are a must on weekends #voodoolilycafe #ciabatta #avocodo #poachedeggs #bacon #hollandaise #danishfeta and touch a #greens the food was good, however, the feta was too salty as a whole combination. Service was not great either unfortunately, is that because of the weather we having?? #joburg #joburglife #joburgfood #foodporn #foodiegram #foodie

We’re always excited when we find spots that serve healthy and wholesome food that also tastes good. The vibe at Voodoo Lily is friendly and family-orientated, with lovely outside seating and a park across the road to keep your kids entertained while you enjoy your cappuccino in (relative) peace. Voodoo Lily prides itself on its carefully considered ingredients, fair-trade coffee and deli full of delicious cheeses, wines and sugar-free snacks – plus, if you stick around for lunch or supper, its sushi is to die for.

Must-try: The banting options

Cape Town

Giulio’s Café, CBD

I hate having too many options….said no-one ever ??☕️?

A post shared by Giulio’s Café (@giulios_cafe) on Apr 25, 2017 at 4:00am PDT

If you value delicious food as much as you value getting a good Instagram pic out of the experience, Giulio’s is the place for you. Shiny menus, lush flower arrangements, chic marble tables and a massive golden wreath make this small spot the perfect backdrop for your morning meal. It does the classics well but is famous for some more unique options like its paprika beans, toffee and banana sauce (served on pancakes), pork apple and sage bangers or grilled peaches and yoghurt.

Must-try: The mimosas
