We chatted to wine-maker Lizelle Gerber – here’s what she had to say.
How did you become interested in wine-making?
Lizelle: All by chance really, but once I was hooked, I was lost forever!
What is your favourite part about your job?
L: Living and growing with the product, experiencing each stage, noticing the changes and getting the chance to stand back and be proud when they reach ‘adulthood’.
Do you have any songs or a specific track you play to get amped?
L: What Doesn’t Kill You Makes You Stronger – Kelly Clarkson.
When did you decide you knew what you wanted from life?
L: It is easier to answer this one by saying, ‘When did you decide you knew what you did not want from life?’ More or less at the age of 17.
Is there anything you think pairs especially well with Boschendal Méthode Cap Classique sparkling wine?
L: Personally, the only pairing is the moment and a good friend. For when I am feeling adventurous – definitely oysters! For the more conservative times – a delicate macaroon does wonders.
How would you describe your approach to life?
L: Spend enough time with yourself to cherish yourself and make time to reconcile. For everything else, go full throttle! Work hard and play hard, and be grateful for each day.
What do you know now that you didn’t know a year ago?
L: Talking is overrated.
If your life was a movie genre what type do you think it would be and why?
L: Suspense. No two instances in life are the same and it’s even more so when it comes wine-making. Suspense keeps you on your toes and sitting on the edge of your seat. Adrenaline keeps the heart pumping, maintains the excitement and explodes in a rush at the successful end result.
Is it easy to get into the wine-making industry and, once you’re in, what does it take to make it?
L: Getting into the wine industry is easy. The hard part is knowing if this is what you really want. Most of your time is spent at work. Make sure you nurture your passion – the old saying that you have to start at the bottom before you can stand tall is very true in the wine industry. Getting your hands dirty alongside your staff is very important. One needs to experience all the aspects of the job to really become part of the big portrait. All the details and components are in the making of art, which becomes a masterpiece. And then, only then, will this masterpiece be presented to the world, which entails some glamour. But the wine industry is not all about glamour. You really have to get your hands dirty before you can appreciate the glamour.
What excites you about life?
L: Waking up in the morning with all my four-legged friends sitting on top of me – staring. As soon as I move, all hell breaks loose because it is FOOD time!
Who is your favourite Spice Girl?
L: Sporty Spice.
Which cellphone app do you use the most?
L: YR Weather.
Is there a specific variety of wine you’re saving for a special occasion?
L: The one most well-known for its ‘free spirit’ – Chardonnay Pinot Noir.
