Amy Bowie's Journey From Beauty Therapist to Beauty Boss

29, founder and owner of Pulse Dermatology and Laser

Amy Bowie completed a specialised three-year course in advanced holistic health, skincare and business studies before landing the position as head therapist at an advanced laser clinic. After two years, she decided to move to London, where her client base included famous A-listers. She was featured regularly in the press and pioneered a few new skincare techniques, going on to lead and train teams of medical therapists at EF Medispa, the top clinic chain in the UK. Her team went on to win the UK’s Gold Standard Aesthetics Award in 2011. When she returned to South Africa, she launched Pulse Dermatology and Laser, an exclusive, discreet, non-surgical aesthetics clinic in Cape Town. Pulsedermatologyandlaser.com

On choosing to be an entrepreneur…

I have always wanted to have my own practice, so when I decided to move back to South Africa it just seemed like the right time. I had a few years in the industry under my belt, and I was at a stage where I knew my vision for my career in beauty. The passion and drive I had was so strong, there really was just no other way.

On initial challenges…

One of the biggest decisions in the beginning was whether I was going to partner with potential investors or go at it on my own. It was not a decision I took lightly; I even had the investors fly down from London and we put a plan together, but after a lot of thought and reflection, I decided it was best to forge my own path, start smaller and grow my business from the ground up into a place that was a true reflection of me.

On what’s important…

Because my business is my heart and soul, one of the things that I have found difficult is getting the right team around me. It has taken a while to find people who fit well, but I am lucky to have some amazing people working with me now.

On advice for other entrepreneurs…

Don’t underestimate yourself. There will always be people around you who think your ambitions are crazy and unobtainable – forget them! That spark you have, that idea that makes you feel alive inside, that is what sets you apart. Feed your fire!

On the essentials…

My personal assistant, my website, my lasers and my phone.
