Should sunning your butthole be part of your morning routine?

Sun out, bum out.

There’s a new wellness trend that apparently improves your sleep, increases your libido, and helps you focus more. All you need to join in is a really, really private sunny area, ‘cos it involves lying down, spreading your legs and letting the sunshine where it usually doesn’t. Perineum sunning is an ancient Taoist practice but is making waves again for its (alleged) health benefits.

According to wellness influencer Ra of Earth, ‘In a mere 30 seconds of sunlight on your butthole, you will receive more energy from this electric node than you would in an entire day being outside with your clothes on’.

Although Ra is low-key a hottie and seems to be in good health, he doesn’t offer any scientific backing to this claim. To add to our doubt we did a little scrolling through his page which shows he also doesn’t believe in toilet paper and washes his body with dirt.

Metaphysical Meagan, another wellness influencer, is also an advocate of butthole sunning. She went viral on Twitter after someone captioned a photo of her doing some perineum sunning with ‘People out here butt-chugging sunlight.’

Meagan lists the benefits of perineum sunning, which include increased creativity, aiding your libido, promoting deeper sleep, better mental focus, and feeling more connected to earth. She says that the change in her life since starting butthole sunning has been ‘profound’. ‘I no longer rely on coffee for energy to start my day because I am getting my energy from the sun. I also am experiencing better sleep and require less sleep due to boost of overall energy,’ she says.

And it’s not just vaguely famous Instagram users who are into this practice: Shailene Woodley is apparently a fan of a bit of bum-in-the-sun fun too. ‘Another thing I like to do is give my vagina a little vitamin D,’ she said in an interview with Into The Gloss.

‘I was reading an article written by an herbalist I studied about yeast infections and other genital issues. She said there’s nothing better than vitamin D. If you’re feeling depleted, go in the sun for an hour and see how much energy you get. Or, if you live in a place that has heavy winters, when the sun finally comes out, spread your legs and get some sunshine.’

How to do perineum sunning

Meagan says the ideal time of day to sun that perineum is between 7am and 9am. You only need 30 seconds of exposure, maximum 5 minutes, so there’s no need for sunscreen.

What do doctors say about it?

In short, it’s BS. According to Dr Diana Gall ‘There is no evidence that sunbathing in this way has any effect on physical well-being. Yes, practicing mindfulness and meditation, and getting your dose of vitamin D, is beneficial for mental and physical health, but you don’t need to damage your skin in the process from sun exposure.’
