Two people have contracted HIV after having a 'vampire facial'

They uses needles to draw blood with the intention of revitalising skin health

Officials investigating a spa in New Mexico believe it is likely two people contracted the HIV virus after undergoing a vampire facial treatment at the facility.

The spa in Albuquerque offered clients vampire facials (otherwise known as Platelet Rich Plasma (PRP) Therapy) as one of its therapies, which involves needles being impressed into the arm in order to draw out blood. The blood is then spun in a machine to separate the plasma and platelets from the red blood cells, and is subsequently applied to the client’s face with the intention of revitalising skin and anti-ageing. It’s thought the separated blood is high in protein and stem cells, boosting collagen production and increasing elasticity in the skin.

But the New Mexico Department of Health was called to investigate when two people contracted the HIV virus following the treatment at the same spa. It has now been identified that the HIV virus is the same in both people, which officials say ‘increas[es] the likelihood’ the infection was contracted via the needles used in the spa. There were no other means by which both people could have contracted the exact same virus, Live Science reports the department said.

The spa has already closed down, after an inspection in September last year discovered its treatment techniques made it possible for blood-borne infections such as HIV, hepatitis B and hepatitis C to be spread. All previous clients of the spa have now been invited for free testing to see if they may also have contracted any infections.

Vampire facials are popular among celebrities including Kim Kardashian.
