Lammily dolls, also known as ‘Normal Barbies’, have proven time and again to be the kind of dolls young girls actually want to buy. With their pimples and cellulite, they look more like actual women than any Barbie in existence. Now, their creator has taken another step towards humanising the doll: Lammily gets her goddamn period.
‘It’s just what happens in real life,’ creator of the doll Nickolay Lamm told Time magazine. ‘We wanted to put it on the doll so it’s not a scary thing.’
The ‘Period Party’ kit comes with a pamphlet explaining menstruation, underwear, 18 brightly coloured pads and a calendar so Lammily’s owner can track her period. It’s unclear if the doll herself actually menstruates somehow, but according to the Period Party site, there is no red food colouring or anything like that included.
The ‘Period Party’ announcement also came with this informational video about the perks of learning about periods from a doll:
It’s not a secret that getting your period is one of the weirdest parts of being a woman. It makes so much sense to introduce young girls to it using a fun and realistic doll. Why didn’t anyone think of this sooner?
