A South African Artist Just Broke a World Record, With This Portrait of Black Coffee

Black Coffee made out of coffee.

Did you know that South Africa holds the record for a whole lot of bizarre things, from the largest gathering of dogs wearing bandanas to the most people blowing a vuvuzela at the same time? Now another South African has been added to the Guinness World Record book, for the largest artwork made from coffee grounds.

Percy Maimela, the artist from Pretoria who holds the unique record, has a story that Ben Affleck and Matt Damon wish they’d written. While working as a merchandiser he accidentally spilled some salt on the floor and felt inspired to draw a beautiful portrait in it. As you do. His colleagues hyped him up so much that he quit to become a full-time artist. He specialises in portraits in salt, that are sprayed with glue before a light sneeze or breath of wind could make them disappear forever.

Percy had always wanted to do a portrait of Black Coffee, everyone’s favourite house DJ, so it felt right that for this world record attempt he swapped the salt for coffee granules. The attempt took place at Sandton City and covered a 5m x 5m canvas. To qualify for the title of the World’s Largest Coffee Grounds Mosaic (Image) an official spokesperson from the Guinness World Records stated that ‘The mosaic must be made entirely of coffee granules, fully grounded, and the image must be instantly recognisable’.

‘This was my first experiment with coffee and it came out perfect. I love what I do, whatever goes on in my mind it’s magic, I actually talk to the art, but I couldn’t because it’s public,’ he told eNCA.

Once the record was broken, the portrait stayed on display in the mall for a few days before being literally swept away. Don’t watch the video; it hurts.
