6 Easy Treats That Taste So Good You Will Forget They're Vegan

The idea that vegans don’t get to eat the good things in life is wrong and dumb. They just need to do a bit more research before, that’s all. Here are some of the best ways to satisfy your sweet tooth without consuming animal products. If you’re going to be sharing your treats with others, bear in mind that non-vegans weirdly love to hate vegan food simply because they know it’s vegan. Beat this by not mentioning it’s vegan, waiting until they’ve licked their plate clean of what they didn’t realise was secretly tofu, and then telling them (try hold back on the smugness, though).

Dark chocolate

Just because you’re trying to be vegan doesn’t mean you can’t enjoy one of the greatest joys in life: chocolate. For way too long, I thought that seeing ‘cocoa butter’ on the list of ingredients meant that it wasn’t vegan. How wrong I was. Any dark chocolate with a percentage from 70% up is usually good to go.


Cinnamon apples

For a midday snack, cut up some apples and sprinkle them with cinnamon. Then pop them in the microwave for about four minutes and enjoy. It’ll taste like you’re having a little slice of apple crumble (granted, without the buttery crumble element but it’s still really good). You could add a bit of granola for crunch too.

Banana-and-peanut-butter ice cream

There’s no reason why vegans should be punished during summer by denying themselves ice cream. People are always sceptical about this recipe because it seems too easy to make ice cream out of nothing but bananas – but trust me. Cut up four bananas into slices, then put them in the freezer until they’re frozen solid (about two hours). Then put the slices in a food processor and blend until they reach an ice cream-like texture. At first it will just look like a weird grainy mess but push through; you’ll be surprised at how similar to ice cream it will look. Then add some peanut butter (and any other flavours you think might work) and you’ve got your ice cream.


Raw cacao bites

Do you always see those delicious-looking vegan chocolate balls in the aisle at the shops and consider buying them but stop yourself because who would pay R50 for a treat? They are actually really easy to make at home and ideal for snacking on throughout the day. Put a cup of walnuts in a food processor and blend until they’re crumbly. Then add a cup of dates and two tablespoons of raw cacao and blend. Next, shape the mixture into little balls and they’re ready to eat.

Peanut-butter cups

Put a mashed banana, half a cup of peanut butter and two tablespoons of melted coconut oil in a bowl and mix. Place the mixture in cupcake moulds or a muffin tray and let it sit in the freezer for two minutes. You’re left with delicious melt-in-your-mouth peanut-butter cups.


Chocolate tart

This one is great for a dinner party, and no-one *ever* guesses that it’s vegan. Make a biscuit base by mixing crushed digestive biscuits and some melted margarine and press it into a tart dish. Then blend two packs of silken tofu and 500g of melted dark chocolate in a blender, pour the mixture on top of your biscuit base and pop it in the fridge for an hour or so. Decorate the top with raspberries to make it look even more impressive.
