COSMO got the chance to hang out with some game-changers, tastemakers and influencers moving the culture forward at the Nirox Winter Sculpture Park in Krugersdorp when we attended the unveiling of Nike’s latest creative campaign in collaboration with the multitalented artist, Manthe Ribane.
We’ve got the inside scoop from the exclusive Nike Air Zoom Pegasus 35, which featured an exclusive art exhibition, an all-femme 3.5km run and a dynamic performance by art collective Dear Ribane.
‘You’re wearing a shoe that’s specifically designed for you’
The Nike Pegasus 35 has the answer in their latest range, which reimagines running for women and takes it to the next level. If you’re looking for a shoe designed with technology that specifically has women in mind, from the silhouette to the soles, look no further. Built for runners at every level, whether you’re a seasoned veteran or just starting out. It features a breathable mesh upper with an out-turned collar for Achilles comfort. Down below, the cushioning has been updated with full-length Zoom Air for the first time ever, to deliver a smoother, more natural stride.
‘The Nike Pegasus has been running for many years but today, with the 35, we’re celebrating the powerful women who were selected to experience the campaign,’ said Manthe. The Pegasus 35 is for someone who truly believes in themselves. Before you even see the craftsmanship of the shoe, you already understand that it was made for you. It becomes a mind shift; not only are you wearing a shoe that’s specifically designed for you to experience a certain narrative of flying, it also becomes a metaphor – when you’re running, half of the time you’re elevated; you’re one step higher.
‘Just looking at the tech of the sole, the fact that we keep on bouncing back and keep the momentum of running, not giving up, that’s like flying – and it’s powerful. Nike and its slogans “Just Do It” and “We Fly” embody that. When we were running the marathon, everyone had that point where they thought they were going to give up, but the power of this design kept us going.’
The Collaboration with Manthe and Nike
Original member of the city’s first Braamfie Runners crew, Manthe teamed up with Nike for an immersive experience that gave us the opportunity to engage with ideas of womanhood, feminism and what it means to be empowered.
Talking about what inspired the dynamic performance, Manthe says it’s all about combining the mind, body and soul to embody the spirit of ‘she flies’. ‘Flight and movement is part of our natural rhythm, and my performance was intended to evoke a sense of freedom,’ she said. ‘This experience elevated and challenged our view on movement – how we move and why we move.’
‘Nike has always believed in me’
We sat down with Manthe during the experience to talk about how we can create spaces for women to empower one another and how she curated the narrative of the Nike Pegasus 35 with a kick-ass experience.
‘Before I even had a platform, Nike believed in me.’ she said. ‘We were part of the first Nike Braam Runners Club and since then we’ve been part of the evolution of the brand. The power of the brand is that Nike is constantly evolving – new technology, new textures, and breathable fabric. That’s innovation on its own. Nike proves you should always think ahead of the times, and having this platform to work with and celebrate the Pegasus 35 means the world to me.
‘Stay true to your craft and don’t sacrifice yourself’
‘Believe that people believe in you if you believe in yourself. It’s important to have conversations – conversations with action. We’re going to leave here and ask how we can go forward: maybe we can create another workshop on how to help women work on social media, but we need to consider how that can be beneficial to them. The digital world is a new world – we need to practise what we preach and the rest will follow.
‘My late parents and my siblings make me fly – my siblings always have my back and those are the people who help me elevate. I wouldn’t be where I am without my team, without everyone who supports and believes in me.’
The Nike Pegasus 35 is out NOW at Nike.com and you can get your hands on the shoe of the future in stores from 31 May.
