Video Showing US Cops Kill Black Man Sparks Protests and Probe

Another black person has been shot and killed by police in the US. On Wednesday morning, a cellphone video recording of the gunning down of Alton Sterling by two white police officers was shared online. The incident, which took place outside a convenience shop in Baton Rouge, Louisana, has sparked protests in the area.

In the video, the two police officers can be seen holding down the a 37-year-old Alton and shooting him in the back. A coroner’s report showed that he was shot multiple times in the back and chest. According to reports, the police responded to an anonymous caller who indicated that a man who was selling music CDs and wearing a red shirt had threatened him with a gun.

Alton is one of many black people in the US that have been killed by the cops, and his death comes two months after the killing of an unarmed black women, Jessica Williams in San Francisco.

A Guardian study revealed at the end of last year that young black men were nine times more likely than other Americans to be killed by police officers in 2015. The study recorded a final tally of 1 134 deaths at the hands of law enforcement officers.

‘Despite making up only 2% of the total US population, African American males between the ages of 15 and 34 comprised more than 15% of all deaths logged this year by an ongoing investigation into the use of deadly force by police.’

The two police officers have been placed on administrative leave.
