This SA Teen Plans to Summit Mt. Kilimanjaro to Help Fellow Teen Girls

She’s inspiring AF

Sehera Bisnath will attempt to summit Mount Kilimanjaro in an effort to raise R1,6-million that will go towards helping fellow teenage girls gain access to sanitary wear. It’s all part of a project called the Sweet 16 Summit, because Bisnath only just turned 16 (in May).

Bisnath will begin the week-long climb on Tuesday 18th July 2017. All funds raised will go to the NPO Dignity Dreams, which educates young girls on menstrual health and hygiene, as well as provides sanitary products to those who cannot afford any.

The average South African woman spends R36 on sanitary products per month, but it is a luxury that many can’t afford. With the funds raised from the climb, Bisnath and Dignity Dreams hope to give every girl who needs it a Destiny Dreams pack to ensure that they can attend school, university or work. These packs will be made up of six sanitary pads (that are washable and can be used for up to five years), an instructional booklet, underwear, a ziplock bag and an educational booklet about menstrual health.

In a post shared the Sweet 16 Summit’s FB page, Sahera wrote: ‘Join me on my journey as I attempt to summit Mt. Kilimanjaro for my 16th birthday. This climb is dedicated to create an awareness for menstrual health and raise funds for fellow young girls who require access to sanitary wear. I am humbled by this opportunity and grateful for the support from my family, friends, the awesome team joining me on this quest and the team, behind the scenes, making it all possible! I wanted to make a difference, and I told my parents and the idea came up. We didn’t choose this date, it was coincidental but with it being Mandela Day it adds more meaning towards my cause,’ the 16-year-old said.

She went on to say that she had often thought about girls her age or younger and the struggles they must face during their period each month. ‘They don’t have access to sanitary wear, so raising awareness and funding for them to have access to this basic necessity seemed appropriate,’ she said.

We’re super proud of the commitment Bisnath has made to help other young women and wish her all the best on the climb.
