Late last night, Miss South Africa Demi-Leigh Nel-Peters was involved in a hijacking incident. According to a statement released on the official Miss South Africa page, Demi-Leigh was approached by three armed hijackers in Smuts Avenue, Hyde Park, Johannesburg.

‘She managed to exit the vehicle and a good Samaritan came to Demi’s aid and drove her away from the scene. Her car and handbag were later recovered at the scene by a security company. The police are investigating further. Demi is shaken by the incident but unharmed.‘

In light of the attempted hijacking incident this evening, @official_missSA can confirm that Demi-Leigh is safe and unharmed.

Following the incident, Minister of Police Fikile Mbalula has released a statement addressing the hijacking incident:

I’ve learned of an attempted hijacked of Miss SA. The attack on women and children will be hard fought. Crime Must Fall pic.twitter.com/119O6BBgpE

In the statement, the minister urged all South Africans to report criminals and stop buying stolen goods or suspected stolen goods as this fuels the market for crime. He vowed to continue deploying all resources needed in the fight against violent crimes and crimes against women, whether at their homes or outside their homes.

He also added:

‘No resources will be spared in the fight against crime. Enough is enough – now is the time to take the war against crime directly to these enemies of the people. It should be made a societal shame when armed men point deadly weapons at females – these cowards are called amagwala.

‘Each father, brother, uncle must realise that each crime against a female could be a crime against a sister, mother or aunt. Men must protect their women folk and not turn them into prey.’

We’re glad Demi is safe and unharmed. ❤️
