The countdown to Black Panther continues! Marvel’s high-anticipated Pan-African instalment is finally out this year. The cast is a celebration of melanin, featuring Oscar winners Lupita Nyong’o and Forest Whitaker, Angela Basset, and Chardwick Boseman (*swoon*)
Keeping in line with the list of greats, South Africa’s very own Connie Chiume will play a role in the film. Chiume spoke to IOL about auditioning for the role, and the excitement of attending the world premiere in Los Angeles next month.
Listen up fam,
SA actress Connie Chiume, an icon of stage & screen, is starring in the most anticipated film of 2018, #BlackPanther.
She will be attending the premiere and the Pan African Film Festival in LA in FEB.

‘I play the mining elder in the movie,’ said Chiume. ‘I auditioned for it right here in South Africa actually but the entire movie was shot in Atlanta in the USA so that’s where all the fun happened.’
The national treasure has been a staple in South African film and TV for decades. Chiume is most recognisable for her work on Rhythm City and Zone 14. The legend is featuring in one of the biggest blockbusters of the year and we’re thrilled!
What’s better than one South African repping our talent? Three. Chiume will be joined by the legendary South African theatre actor, John Kani and his son, Atandwa Kani.
This is the first time a superhero film is featuring a majority black cast. Black directors, writers, and costume designers also contributed to the film. It’s refreshing to see black superheroes and villains in and the world of Wakanda where Black Panther is set. The representation of the film reimagines diverse African communities in the Marvel cinematic universe. In this movie, POC get to save the world, too.
Keep your diaries open for the release on the 16th Feb, fam!
