You know what’s a good way to put your recent breakup in the back of your mind? Drop a cool new music video. Which is exactly what Ariana Grande just did. Say hello to the video for Breathin.
With her signature high ponytail resting upon her head like a crown, Ariana starts off singing in a bar before she moves to sitting on top of a bunch of packed suitcases—does this mean she could get up and go at any second?
Throughout most of the video, the pop star walks through a crowded train station as people rush all around her, a scene that perfectly matches the song’s message about having anxiety.
In an interview with BBC, Ariana got candid about her anxiety, ‘You have ups and downs and sometimes you’ll go weeks at a time where you will be crushing it and there will be no anxiety…and then something will happen that can trigger it and then you have a couple of down days.’
There also seems to be some subtle Pete symbolism hidden in here. Between shots of the station and of her sitting on the bags, Ariana’s face is hidden behind thick clouds—clouds that look just like her and Pete’s matching phone cases and tattoos. The song mentions someone who helps take her cares away, and if this video had been released just a few weeks ago, we definitely would have guessed she was talking about Pete.
In the end, she ends up swinging through the sky and surrounded by a bunch of clouds, which could also represent a weight being lifted off her shoulders and a feeling of freedom.
The video is completely emotional and triumphant, and it will for sure make you root for Ariana.
