Last night, the finale of the first season of The Bachelor South Africa took place and it kinda didn’t have the happy ending we were expecting.
After a long season of epic drama, SA’s first bachelor Lee Thompson gave his final rose (and engagement ring) to make-up artist, Gina Myers (which I totally called after the first episode tbh). It was all very romantic as he proposed in Mauritius, and the two left on a romantic vacay.
But sadly that meant that the runner-up, Jozaan Dique left empty-handed as Lee said, ‘It hurts me to say this, but my heart is with someone else. I have to say goodbye to you today, I’m sorry.’ Lee, later told Channel24 that he knew that Jozaan would not move to Cape Town to be with him and he couldn’t do another long-distance relationship.
To Gina, Lee said, ‘You have the most beautiful heart I have ever come across in anyone, ever. And I would like to take your heart and look after it and give you mine in return. Gina, my Gina, when I’m with you, I feel like I am home. And I don’t want this fairy-tale to ever end.’ It’s enough to make my heart melt rn.
Gina’s response was ‘I love his heart and I think that is the most important part. I feel like this is all surreal. I feel like I am going to wake up from a dream.’
But then they did wake up…
In the After the Rose section of the finale, it was revealed that Lee and Gina have since broken up.
‘After that final day, I was extremely confused mentally and emotionally. Back in the real world, our relationship got off to a rocky-start and I wasn’t fully there for Gina when she needed me. That’s the bottom line and that affected our relationship,’ Lee said on the episode.
Gina also added, ‘I walk away with incredible friendships. I’m a much stronger person for it. Beautiful memories. Lee taught me things about myself that I didn’t know. And I still believe in fairy-tales.’
So after 24 women, 12 weeks, Lee is still available…brb
But of course, South Africa’s reactions were part of the fun:
Three big mysteries. Who shot Tupac. Who leaked the Adam Catzavelos racist rant from the what’s app group and what happened between Lee and Gina Myers #TheBachelorSA

How can you tell someone that you love them but not be there for them when they needed you the most. Gina was better of without him. #TheBachelorSA

We watched a whole season of #TheBachelorSA to see people date at the end. A televised Tinder. ?
