Thando Thabete Is Not Having It With the Twitter Backlash Around Pearl Thusi's Upcoming AKA Roast

The roast of AKA or Pearl?

It’s no secret that Pearl Thusi and AKA have a camaraderie, a history if you will. The two have been known to engage in a bit of friendly banter, both on Twitter and IRL. So when it was announced that Pearl, who has had many clever clap-backs and disses for the hitmaker over the years, would be the Roastmaster at the upcoming roast of AKA, we were here for it. But the internet seemed to have other ideas.

Let’s back it up for a second. Pearl, a bona fide star with a long history in the South African entertainment industry, was announced as the first ever black female Roastmaster of the Comedy Central event. Making history, smashing through the glass ceiling and forging the way for women in entertainment. And some folks on Twitter felt it wasn’t justified, just because Pearl doesn’t label herself as a “comedian”. Okay, got it.

But Thando Thabete was not having it. The actress and radio host took to Twitter to defend Thusi and her appointment as the comedy host.

The debate comes hot on the heels of a recent uptick in the Twitter conversation around the “Open Up the Industry” movement, which argues that local celebs can’t be an all-in-one package and would like to see more newcomers in the SA entertainment scene.
