British Singer, Sam Smith, unexpectedly ended his concert 45 minutes into the show on the first night of his ‘Thrill of it All Tour’ in Cape Town last night.
The show kicked off with the singer’s latest single ‘Dancing With A Stranger’, followed by many popular tracks such as ‘I’m Not The Only One’, ‘Lay Me Down’, ‘Omen’, and ‘Like I Can’. He cheerfully danced along to all songs, interacted with the crowd and told them how he’s always wanted to come to Cape Town since he was a little boy. And he even brought his mom along, who was in the crowd.
Smith, along with his band and back-up vocalists then commenced singing ‘Baby, You Make Me Crazy, until mid-way through when the singer walked off and announced ‘take it way, Patrick’. Some concert-goers believed it was time for a costume change as you can see from social media his set includes different outfits with different songs.
Here it is. The last moment we saw him. He ran off, saying “take it away Patrick”……. and never came back 😭 pic.twitter.com/fbwpjrhqpp

After a few moments, the song ended and the stage lights went off. The crowd waited patiently until a voice came on announcing that there were some technical difficulties. Then an official announced that the show will, unfortunately, be canceled due to vocal strain on Sam Smith’s voice. The crowd waited around in disbelief for a little while and everyone started filing out of the arena.
Will The Show Go On?
Online, Big Concerts, tweeted this official statement:
Sam Smith’s CPT concert tonight has been cancelled. Unfortunately Sam Smith took strain to his voice & had to stop his performance. Ticket holders will be contacted directly. We will keep you posted with more info for the other CPT performances as it becomes available.

This morning on KFM, an official from Big Concerts commented further on the statement above about the decision to pull the show after 45 minutes. It seems that tonight and tomorrow’s show could still go ahead according to the clip.
Has Vocal Strain Been A Problem Before?
The singer had tweeted back in March that he had been on vocal rest for 3 long months before heading out on the road again.
After 3 months off from performing, the last week has been a game of catch up. Been training my voice everyday and also getting back into my fitness. So nice to get back into the swing of things.
