Prince Harry and Meghan Markle have finally announced their engagement, and we’re chuffed for them.
The joyous news was broken by Kensington Palace on social media this morning, who released a statement reading:
‘His Royal Highness Prince Henry of Wales and Ms Meghan Markle are engaged to be married. The Prince of Wales made this announcement this morning: His Royal Highness The Prince of Wales is delighted to announce the engagement of Prince Harry to Ms Meghan Markle.
His Royal Highness Prince Henry of Wales and Ms. Meghan Markle are engaged to be married. The Prince of Wales made this announcement this morning: His Royal Highness The Prince of Wales is delighted to announce the engagement of Prince Harry to Ms. Meghan Markle. The wedding will take place in Spring 2018. Further details about the wedding day will be announced in due course. His Royal Highness and Ms. Markle became engaged in London earlier this month. Prince Harry has informed Her Majesty, The Queen and other close members of his family. Prince Harry has also sought and received the blessing of Ms. Markle's parents. The couple will live in Nottingham Cottage at Kensington Palace.
So far, information about the big day is fairly limited, but it looks like the couple are following in Prince William and Kate Middleton’s footsteps by marrying in just a few months’ time. The statement read: ‘The wedding will take place in spring 2018. Further details about the wedding day will be announced in due course.’
Prince William proposed to long-term girlfriend Kate in secret while on holiday together in Kenya back in October 2010, but the official announcement didn’t come until the morning of November 16, 2010 when St James’ Palace held a press conference.
The couple’s wedding took place just five-and-a-half months later, on April 29, 2011.
The country was given an additional bank holiday for the royal celebration, so if all is fair in love and life, they can hopefully expect another one of those this time around, too.
According to the statement, Prince Harry popped the all-important question ‘in London earlier this month’. Being something of a traditionalist, it’s also been revealed that Prince Harry ‘sought and received the blessing of Ms Markle’s parents’ before he did the deed.
While we’re all hysterically excited about the engagement announcement, we can’t say it’s come as any real surprise – there’s been speculation that the couple has been engaged for some time now, since they were pictured holding hands, kissing, and looking all kinds of loved up together at the Toronto Invictus Games back in September.
The announcement that Harry and Meghan are now betrothed also confirms the rumours that the actress has definitely quit her role as paralegal Rachel Zane in Suits. After having played the part for seven seasons, there was speculation that she’d quit so she could move to live in the UK with Harry full-time. The pair were apparently house-hunting in the Cotswolds back in October, suggesting they might settle down there for a country life together (when they’re not busy with all their Royal engagements, of course). But according to the Palace’s official announcement, the pair will be residing in London for the time being, making Nottingham Cottage at Kensington Palace their home.
The popular couple will be appearing for an official photo call to celebrate their engagement later today, just as William and Kate did, and an interview with the couple will air tonight.
So now we can all sit back and count down the days until the upcoming Royal Wedding when Meghan becomes the Duchess of somewhere or another and we all live vicariously happily ever after.
