Oprah Winfrey has been known for the good work that she has done around the world, but perhaps one of the biggest things that she has been known for in South Africa is the creation of the Oprah Winfrey Leadership Academy for Girls in Henley-on-Klip, Gauteng.
The school which opened in 2007 and was created to provide educational and leadership opportunities for academically gifted girls from underprivileged backgrounds in South Africa. The school runs from grades 8-12 and the inaugural class of 72 students graduated in 2011.
One of her former students from her inaugural class, Gloria Rapalalani, recently got engaged and Oprah took her and two other former students shopping for a wedding dress.

Oprah shut down Saks Fifth Avenue bridal boutique in Beverly Hills so that the quartet should shop in peace. The other two former students that joined Oprah and Gloria were Morgan Mpungose and Mpumi Nobiva.
Mpumi posted about the experience on her Instagram story:
The Queen of Talk also posted about the experience on Instagram by saying, ‘I’ve known these girls since they were 12 and 13 coming to my school. Graduating from college. Grad school. Now our first wedding. Looking for the perfect dress. #biglifemoment’
Oprah was also present at Gloria’s graduation last year and makes a point to show up for her former students even after they have left her school.
She continues to inspire numerous generations of women to reach for their dreams and to create a better future for themselves and others.
