Here's the Real Story Behind Nomzamo Mbatha's Graduation Dress

‘Going back to finish off the race was not easy’

In the spirit of celebrating #BlackExcellence this week and remembering Winnie Madikizela-Mandela , Nomzamo Mbatha’s graduation is on the top of our lists.

The actress and ambassador is adding University of Cape Town, BCom Accounting graduate to her growing resume.

Mbatha’s ceremony got the spotlight with a shout-out to the late Mama Winnie, a glam post-graduation party hosted by Mbatha with free bubbly at the exclusive Pepperclub Hotel suite in Cape Town and a devoted BF gushing about her on social media *swoon*

But the real showstopper of the event was that dress.

Mbatha gave a cryptic hint before the ceremony that the yet-to-be-revealed dress was going to be special. The gorgeous gown made by Vanessa Gounden wasn’t just designed to delight but also to commemorate Mbatha’s loved ones who have passed away.

The dress was a way to celebrate with those who are gone but not forgotten. Featured in the tribute gown were portraits and candid images of her late father and sister. Also given a space to be remembered on the gown is the influencer’s late sister Carla who committed suicide in 2014.

In an Instagram post, the actress wrote just how much the dress meant to her.

‘I wanted the pictures of my late baby sister, Carla, late older sister, Matu, my late father, Nicholas Nxumalo and the greatest love of my life, the woman who named me Nomzamo, my late grandmother, MamJoli. The many tragedies I had to survive.’

The star posted the reactions of family members on Twitter seeing the dress for the first time on Instagram and warning – it’s so beautiful, there will be tears.

In her Instagram caption detailing the story of the dress, Mbatha includes that the gown has the South African Depression & Anxiety Group’s number – encouraging anyone who needs to help to reach out:

And to anyone struggling, be it through anxiety or depression, Mbatha says you’re not alone.
