Metro FM's Miss SA Twitter Poll Enrages South Africans

What is going on over at Metro FM? The radio station is trending for all the wrong reasons again – this time for an insensitive poll the station ran on their Twitter account.

Last week, South Africans rejoiced as Zozibini Tunzi was crowned as the new Miss South Africa at the pageant’s prestigious finale event on Women’s Day. The 25-year-old, a natural-haired beauty, was a fan favourite from the start and represents what many South Africans feel is an under-represented representation of South African beauty.

The judge’s decision was met with praise on social media, with local media personality Bonnie Mbuli sharing her own approval in a Tweet:

Her followers were quick to agree – the Tweet has been liked more 26 000 times and retweeted more than 3000 times.  A quick scroll through the replies proves that Zozibini will be a Miss SA that takes representation a long way in this country.

So it came as an unwelcome surprise when Metro FM took it upon themselves to run a Twitter poll encouraging their followers to weigh in on Zozibini’s win. The Tweet has since been deleted, but the internet never forgets, and screengrabs of the poll have been shared by other users of the platform.

Why run a poll designed to put a woman down when she has just been crowned to represent our nation to the delight of the people?

The SABC has issued a statement on the offensive Tweet, distancing themselves from the incident.

The incident serves as a reminder to be kind on any and all platforms and to build women up, rather than tear them down, always.
