We are faced with some tragic news in the Grey’s Anatomy universe. For those who haven’t heard, Justin Chambers, aka Dr Alex Karev, is leaving the show after 16 seasons.

This morning, Justin released a statement to Deadline and announced that he’s ready to move on and pursue other roles. He told the outlet:

‘There’s no good time to say goodbye to a show and character that’s defined so much of my life for the past 15 years. For some time now, however, I have hoped to diversify my acting roles and career choices. And as I turn 50 and am blessed with my remarkable, supportive wife and five wonderful children, now is that time.’

He also went on to thank the show’s creator, Shonda Rhimes and gave a special shout-out to the only three remaining original cast membersEllen Pompeo, Chandra Wilson, and James Pickens Jr. Of course, Justin didn’t forget about the fans and thanked them for ‘an extraordinary ride’ as well.

Justin joined the show in 2005 playing a surgical intern before his character Alex moved up to the department head of pediatric surgery and the chief of surgery at the show’s Pacific Northwest General Hospital.

The last episode he was in aired November 14 and revolved around Alex leaving the hospital to take care of his mother. He wasn’t in the season finale, and it’s thought that the November 14 episode was his last.
