Emily Ratajkowski Rocks Armpit Hair and Opens Up About Her Identity

💪💪💪 Go EM!

  • Emily Ratajkowski embraces her armpit hair and writes about being a feminist in a new Harper’s Bazaar personal essay.
  • She explains why she struggled with being labeled as ‘hyper femme.’

Aside from being known for her objectively good looks, her role as the girl who hooked up with Ben Affleck in Gone Girl, and being a stylish designer, Emily Ratajkowski is also known as a badass feminist who is committed to being whoever she wants no matter what anyone else thinks. And that’s exactly what she’s doing in the September issue of Harper’s Bazaar. For the magazine, she penned an essay opening up about her identity and explaining why she was thrown when her friend called her “hyper femme.” Oh, and she also rocked her armpit hair.

She started out her personal essay with this acknowledgement: ‘I’m a cis white woman. I’m well aware of the privilege I receive as someone who is heteronormative, and I don’t pretend to act like my identity hasn’t made some things easier for me.’ Cool! Movin’ on!

EmRata said that while she considers herself a ‘staunch feminist,’ she was taken aback when someone called her ‘hyper femme.’ At the time (two summers ago), she felt offended and like it was an oversimplification of who she is. She explained, ‘In my day-to-day life, I was not aware of being femme or masc or anything but just me.’

She later realised that being ‘occasionally hyper feminine’ and ‘sexy’ was a source of strength for her. She added, ‘I feel powerful when I’m feeling myself, and sometimes feeling myself means wearing a miniskirt. Sometimes it means wearing a giant hoodie and sweats.’ Basically, she’s just into doing whatever she wants and not worrying about what other people might think. Mood!

As for why she chose to show off her armpit hair for this essay, it’s because she can do whatever TF she wants. She said, ‘For me, body hair is another opportunity for women to exercise their ability to choose….On any given day, I tend to like to shave, but sometimes letting my body hair grow out is what makes me feel sexy.’ And for her, whether she shaves or not doesn’t determine whether she’s a good or ‘bad feminist.’

Say it louder for the people in the back!
