It may be a frosty winter here in South Africa but Childish Gambino is bringing the summer. The artist, also known as Donald Glover, just released the widely acclaimed This Is America, a track delving deep into social issues of police brutality and racism in America – but he’s not stopping there. Yesterday, the Grammy Award-winning musician released two new singles in what he describes as a ‘Summer Pack’: Summertime Magic and Feels Like Summer.

The tracks will be featured in Childish Gambino’s fourth studio album. Both songs are warm and vibey but, in true Gambino fashion, Feels Like Summer has a deeper message none of us expected.
‘You can feel it in the streets / On a day like this, the heat / It feels like summer’
It starts off like your regular song about hot days and cooldrinks, even with the bouncy tunes to match, but the lyrics include social commentary about climate change, global warming, bee extinction and water scarcity.
‘Every day gets hotter than the one before / Running out of water, it’s about to go down / Go down / Air that killed the bees that we depend upon / Birds were made for singing, waking up to no sound / No sound’
Childish Gambino is known for putting forward hard-hitting messages in subversive pop songs so listen up for all the subliminal messages – you may just miss them.
