After more than two months since its release, Black Panther still stays slaying the box office. This time the multi-billion dollar Marvel wunderkind continues to turn the culture on its head by making South African history.
The film has set the bar as the highest-grossing movie in South African cinema, raking in over R100 million the box-office since its release.
In its opening weekend alone, Black Panther managed to gross over R16 million at the box office in SA. It’s also the third-biggest opening weekend for a film, with over 200 000 people going to see it in the span of three days.
It’s also the second biggest film opening weekend of all time (excluding previews) and the biggest debut for any Marvel film in South Africa.
Black Panther was unbeatable before it even released and in the space of just four weeks has managed to gross the coveted and rare billion-dollar benchmark. In fact, last week Black Panther knocked tear-jerker classic Titanic off its 21-year record as the third highest grossing United States film of all time.
Black Panther will eventually make its way out of the cinema and into our homes but Wakanda Fever is far from over – Avengers: Infinity War is coming to SA in 10 days and counting so get ready to see more #blackexcellence.
