South African actor lands the lead role in a US sitcom from the creators of The Big Bang Theory

2019 has been a great year for SA actors. Thuso Mbedu was cast in Barry Jenkins’ Underground RailroadNomzamo Mbatha was cast in Coming to America 2 and now Durban native, Adhir Kalyan will star as the lead in The United States of Al.

According to Deadline, The United States of Al was created by The Big Bang Theory producers Chuck Lorre, David Goetsch, Maria Ferrari and religious scholar Reza Aslan.

The comedy series is about the friendship between and a Marine combat veteran who is struggling to readjust to his civilian life in Ohio, and Awalmir aka Al (Adhir Kalyan), who was his interpreter in Afghanistan who has just started a new life in the US.

Adhir is the son of politician and DA member of parliament, Sandy Kalyan. He moved to London in 2005 after finishing his schooling at Crawford College in Durban. Since then he has landed roles in international series like Aliens in America, Rules of Engagement and I Love Dick. He has also appeared in films like Paul Blart: Mall Cop 2 and No Strings Attached.
