Why You Should *NEVER* Let Sheet Masks Dry on Your Face

Consider yourself warned ⚠️

We all love a good face mask. Not least of all because they are a great – maybe even the best – way to unwind. For a long time those goopy clay varieties were the face mask of choice, because they are great at sucking up excess oil and grime from your skin to keep you imperfection-free. These days, hydration is all the hype, and sheet masks are here to deliver.

They’re the Sheet

Sheet masks have been popular in K-Beauty circles for a long time, but have only recently become popular, and available, in SA. What’s so great about them isn’t just how weird you look in your hi-LAR-ious Instagram selfies...

…but also their vast range of skin-beautifying properties. They come drenched in a mega-dose of serum that targets specific skin concerns and, in most cases, leaving them on for the recommended 10 minutes to half an hour is all that you need to reap some serious benefits. Whether you struggle with acne, pigmentation or wrinkles, there’s a sheet mask for that.

Too Much of a Good Thang…

So because they are so great, many people thought that leaving them on until they had dried would be a good idea. Because if it’s dry it means all the product has absorbed into your skin which is a good thing, right? Not so.

Dermatologists have said that we should always follow the instructions because some of the ingredients in sheet masks are good for your skin but only in moderation, or within a certain timeframe. Leaving sheet masks on longer can cause ingredients, which are good for your skin over a 20-minute period, to irritate the skin, which is the opposite of what you want to achieve.

And remember:

Preach!

Using a sheet mask is not a time to be rebellious, so proceed with caution. You have been warned.
