Fashion month has officially come to an end, which means the mystical fashion powers that be have released a whole new batch of spring 2020 hair trends into the wild (aka the internet). And whether you like it or not (or, more realistically, whether or not you even give a flip about fashion week), Miranda Priestly was right when she said the very trends you’ll see all over your Instagram next season stem from the shows that took place this month. Basically, you’ve been warned.
And if you want to get in on the hair trends—read: post a very good hair selfie—before your archnemesis does, check out the 13 best, prettiest, and most Insta-worthy spring 2020 hair trends, below, along with tricks and products to recreate them on yourself.
1 Spring 2020 Hair Trend: Pearls
Be honest: Have you ever seen pearls look so damn…cool?! Far removed from your grandma’s necklaces, the pearls at Andrew Gn were fastened to crisp cornrows and sleek topknots, giving them a definitively modern, Insta-worthy vibe for spring 2020.
TRY THE HAIR TREND: Twist pearl spin pins (remember those?) through your own braids or buns, or slide a pearl-encrusted clip through one side of your hair.
2 Spring 2020 Hair Trend: Lavender Sprigs
We’ve all seen the flower crown rise, fall, and rise again, but for spring 2020, the hair trend isn’t just about florals—it’s about lavender specifically. Models at Alice + Olivia paired bright lilac cream eyeshadow with sprigs of lavender stuck throughout their boho braids for a fairy garden feel.
TRY THE HAIR TREND: Braid the sides of your hairline back in a regular three-strand braid, pinning in place in the centre of your head. Then thread pieces of fake lavender through your braid, bobby-pinning the ends in place.
3 Spring 2020 Hair Trend: Neon Buns
If you look super closely—and, like, please do—the models at Nicole Miller had streaks and splotches of neon paint scattered throughout their hair. Precision was not a factor in these spring 2020 hairstyles; buns were haphazard, messy, and falling apart. But the bright, unexpected moments of pure colour made the whole style feel less like a craft project and more like a work of art.
TRY THE HAIR TREND: Don’t be too nervous to try this colourful look—it’s nothing your average festival girl hasn’t experimented with a million times before. After throwing your hair into a masterfully messy bun, blast one side of it with a temporary colour spray, keeping the nozzle close to your head to create an opaque, concentrated circle of colour.
4 Spring 2020 Hair Trend: ’80s Hair Combs
If you needed further proof that the ’80s and ’90s are taking over all of spring 2020’s hair trends, just look at the Tory Burch show. Models wore their hair brushed out and pulled back with combs—a look that’s loosely inspired by Princess Diana (and, like, all our moms).
TRY THE HAIR TREND: Brush your hair out (or keep your natural texture as is), then create a deep side part over one eyebrow. Scoop each side of your hair back, securing with comb hair clips, and smooth any flyaways with a layer of hairspray.
5 Spring 2020 Hair Trend: Crystals
How freaking gorgeous is this hair?! Soft, romantic waves and curls were all over the Bibhu Mohapatra runway this season, but the most unexpected spring hair trend for 2020 was the smattering of hair crystals fastened to a few of the models’ hair.
TRY THE HAIR TREND: I mean, short of glueing crystals to your own hair (which, hello, please do that), the easiest—and quickest—way of recreating this look is to slide a crystal hair piece into one side of your hair, just behind your ear.
6 Spring 2020 Hair Trend: Twisted Half-Up Buns
Half-up topknots? ~So~ 2019. But twisted half-up topknots? A mouthful, and also a major spring 2020 hair trend, according to the Anna Sui show. Models wore fluffy, combed-out textures with giant, messy, free-flying buns—basically, IDGAF embodied.
TRY THE HAIR TREND: Section off your hair from ear to ear (or, for a smaller bun, from temple to temple), then split the section down the middle, so you’re holding hair on each side of your part. Loosely roll each section inward, from your hairline to your crown, pinning in place, then twist and coil the ends into a bun on the crown of your head, pinning in place again.
7 Spring 2020 Hair Trend: Giant Finger Waves
Finger waves will never not be in style, and just to really drive home the fact that they’re going to be a huge spring hair trend, Ermanno Scervino made the finger waves at its spring 2020 show, well, huge. Ultra-shiny and super-glossy, the giant finger waves feel both retro and updated for spring.
TRY THE HAIR TREND: Listen, if you thought that last hair trend was hard to explain, you better believe finger waves won’t be any easier. And, thus, I present to you this relatively easy finger-waves tutorial. Start practising!
8 Spring 2020 Hair Trend: Major Hair Pieces
The itty-bitty barrettes and clips of 2019 are getting amped-the-hell up for spring 2020, moving from the accent category to statement territory. The models at Afffair wore jewel-encrusted flowers clipped in their hair and strings of crystals along their parts to create an air of elegance.
TRY THE HAIR TREND: You don’t have to go big/home to cash in on this hair trend. Play around with different crystal flowers and gemstone pins in silver shades, and you’ll be all set.
9 Spring 2020 Hair Trend: Adorned Braids
Let’s be real: box braids and braids in general will never not be a trend, but for the models at Pyer Moss, they were especially front and centre, with beads and golden flowers adorning the lengths of the models’ hair.
TRY THE HAIR TREND: Thread a stack of white and champagne beads through your box braids (or ask your braider to do them), mixing and matching them with gold flower hair pins.
10 Spring 2020 Hair Trend: Bouncy Ponytails
I’m so sorry, but the same ol’ topknots of 2019 have been officially put on hold while we marvel at the sleek, bouncy ponytails at Dennis Basso. The models wore their hair brushed back and tied, with the ends of the ponytail softly curled. This spring 2020 hair trend is givin’ me major ’50s vibes in the best way possible.
TRY THE HAIR TREND: Thankfully, this one is incredibly easy to recreate. Just brush your hair into a mid-level ponytail at the back of your head and secure with an elastic. Curl the ends of your ponytail around a curling iron, section by section, then brush them out while they’re still warm to create soft bends, not curls.
11 Spring 2020 Hair Trend: Messy Buns
The messier the hair the better, if the models at Fendi are any indication of the next big spring 2020 hair trend (and they most definitely are). Ultra-messy, running-late-for-life double buns, half buns, and chignons were the look, much to the happiness of lazy humans everywhere.
TRY THE HAIR TREND: I mean, really, this couldn’t be any simpler, because you basically have permission to mess it up. To create these double buns, scoop up half of your hair on one side of your part and tie it in a ponytail loop (like when you create a ponytail but only pull half of your hair through the elastic to create a loop). Leave the ends free, and repeat on the other side. Thank you, fashion gods.
12 Spring 2020 Hair Trend: ’60s Hair
Can an entire decade be a hair trend? It sure as hell can, and Veronica Beard proved that by sending its models down the runway with deep, side-swooping parts, teased crowns, and blunt baby bangs, à la Mad Men meets year 2020 (…and feminism).
TRY THE HAIR TREND: I highly recommend finally taking the plunge and getting some micro baby bangs, but if that sounds way too intense, try a faux side-bang for spring. Create a super-deep side part at the tail of your eyebrow, brush your hair behind your ears, letting it swoop across your forehead, then pin it in place behind your ear. Lightly tease your crown, then scoop your hair into a French twist, a half-up ponytail, whatever. It’s all about those ‘bangs.’
13 Spring 2020 Hair Trend: Slicked Back
Clean and polished was the overall hair tone at Carolina Herrera’s Spring 2020 show, with models wearing their bobs, lobs, and even back-length hair slicked back at the roots down to the napes of their neck.
TRY THE HAIR TREND: For a quick wet-look finish, rub a dab of hair gel between your wet hands, then rake your hands through your roots, pushing your hair back behind your ears. Keep re-applying thin layers of gel, then comb it all back with a fine-tooth comb and blast it with hairspray.
