Hyaluronic acid is a skincare ingredient which has been getting a lot of attention over the last few years. It’s ideal for people who have dehydrated skin because of its magical ability to attract and retain water on (and in) the skin. It’s even lovingly referred to as ‘nature’s moisturiser’ because of it’s skin-saving superpowers.
It is one of the most common ingredients in modern skincare products because of how effective it is. But did you know that there is a right and a wrong way to use it? And apparently, if you don’t do it right, it ain’t gonna work. We too are guilty of this beauty transgression, but when you know better, you do better – amiright?
Hyaluronic acid is generally found in products like micellar water, serum and face cream so that you can hydrate your skin while you get your life. This means that it’s generally applied after having washed and dried our faces. But this is where things go wrong. According to skincare professionals, we should actually be applying it when our faces are still damp. Why? If you apply it to dry skin, instead of retaining the existing water on your face, it will draw water out from the nearest source, which is the deeper layers of your skin. True story. The result? Even drier skin than you had before.
So what is the best way to use it? Directly after cleansing on damp skin. If it’s a serum, seal it in with moisturiser immediately after. If your skin is really parched, make sure it becomes a permanent fixture in your skincare regimen and apply it daily.
So, by all means, drench yourself in this stuff. But make sure that you do it correctly so that you get those glowing results.
