On 24 September annually we celebrate Heritage Day here in SA, which isn’t awesome just because it means we get a day off work (although that is pretty sweet) but because it’s a time to reconnect with and celebrate the myriad cultures in South Africa.
Not only is Mzansi home to some of the world’s most stunning women (we might be a tad biased) but they also know their way around a makeup brush. And – just in case you need proof – here are five beauty tutorials to show you how to slay the Heritage-Day makeup game.

This Xhosa makeup look – complete with traditional beading – is a natural look, with the main emphasis being on the cultural dots on the chin and cheekbones. Not that the uploader needed much in order to look flawless.
This look is also inspired by the Xhosa culture, and while this YouTuber also made the white cultural markings the focal point, she also zhuzhed it up with a nude glossy lip, a bold brow and some shimmery gold eyeshadow.
This uploader schools us in how to create a full face beat using the colours of the South African flag – talk about Mzansi Magic! And she manages to create one that looks glam, gorgeous and the perfect look for a public holiday.
This YouTube user has taken the adage ‘fly the flag’ very literally… and we love it! Rather than covering your whole face with the SA flag (unless you are super invested in the Rugby World Cup) try this more-subtle-but-still-iconic version instead.
This look is inspired by the Xhosa and Zulu cultures, and not only has the white dots but also some bold pops of red on this MUA’s lips and cheeks. Red lipstick can elevate just about any outfit, and this video proves it.
Lastly, because we love you, here is a video of some Xhosa face painting ASMR for your viewing (and relaxation) pleasure.
